SANTA IS COMING TO HAWEA! Written by: Barb Mackenzie

Hawea is celebrating with a special Christmas Village and visits from Santa, at the Lake Hawea Community Centre, to get us all in the mood for the coming festive season. A village full of surprise and wonder, to delight and intrigue the young and old. This will be the largest display of Christmas in the Upper Clutha area. The village highlights include Dasher’s Den, Vixen’s AirBnB, Comet’s Train Set, Santa’s Station and many more. You enter through Prancer’s Pathway, made up of hundreds of tiny lights and visit Cupid’s Crafty Cottage, where you will marvel at the array of beautiful Christmas craft and enjoy the alternative view of 'The Twelve Days of Christmas'. Santa will play several instruments in Dancer’s Merry Music Shop, where children can also join in. See Comet’s Christmas Model Train Set, made especially for the village. The Elves’ Toy Shop will fascinate all ages.

Santa will be in his new sleigh, with his reindeer at the foot of the snow covered mountain, for Children’s photographs on Saturday and Sunday 5 and 6 December, in the morning and afternoon. Children will love the range of interactive activities available. After last year’s success with the Hawea Christmas House, Barbara and Elizabeth have been inspired to build something bigger and better. Like Santa they have been in the workshop for the whole year toiling away. The display will also be open on Tuesday and Thursday, 8 and 10 December and available for groups on request. Come and enjoy this wonderful spectacle with us. A Christmas Raffle is available at the Centre, with first prize being an heirloom quality quilt, featuring New Zealand red native flowers. The cost is $5.00 for adults, $2.00 for children and $10.00 for a family. Supported and sponsored by the Lake Hawea Community Centre.

As another year rolls around, we come to a point where we need to stop and really take stock of what 2020 has brought us.

As we enter the advent period and looking forward to the Christmas break that many enjoy, we need to prepare for the holiday season ahead. Much of the local accommodation seems to be fully booked for this period, which will be a relief for that sector which has experienced a difficult year with the effects of COVID-19 on the economy. Police have continued to have a few problems to deal with. Monday saw Police dealing with an extremely intoxicated male for driving with excess breath alcohol, over 5 times the legal limit. A member of the public tried to intervene and take the keys from this irresponsible offender. Tuesday saw Police deal with a dispute between housemates, that led to an eviction. Another male was apprehended for excess breath alcohol. Wednesday saw Police deal with a sudden death at Makarora, our condolences to the family and friends. Thursday saw Police deal with two major accidents. A crash outside the Wanaka airport saw two victims flown to hospital with serious injuries. The second of these, in Albert Town is suspected to be the result of an intoxicated motorist. Police will be awaiting the results of his blood test. Friday saw Police deal with another intoxicated motorist and we also dealt with a male who assaulted the manager of the Albert Town Four Square, when refused service of alcohol. This was the same problem male, who had crashed his car whilst intoxicated on the previous evening. Saturday saw reoccurrence of the Wanaka Fight Club outside the Pie window. Let’s have good behaviour, it is an area fully covered by security cameras. Sunday saw Police deal with a search and rescue matter. Please communicate your intentions clearly, we do not wish to waste money on misinformation. Police also dealt with a family harm matter, that resulted in the separation of the parties. As we move into summer traffic, tourist numbers will pick up. Please drive to suit the conditions. Try not to get the family into economic difficulties with Christmas, spend time not money if you can. Keep safe this week, be careful not to drink and drive, treat each other with the kindness you would like to be shown yourself. y

BACKGROUND Lake Wānaka Tourism (LWT) is the Regional Tourism Organisation formed in 1993, to market the Wānaka region to domestic and international visitors. It is a region of spectacular natural beauty, bounded by the Te Wahipounamu UNESCO world heritage area (Mt Aspiring National Park) in the west, Haast Pass in the north and the Crown Range saddle to the south. ABOUT THE ROLE The General Manager is the face and advocate of the tourism sector for the Wānaka region, and will be responsible for leading a small highperforming team and driving organisational values and strategy over two businesses - Lake Wānaka Tourism and the Wānaka i-SITE Visitor Centre, on behalf of 510+members. The pause caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, has provided a unique opportunity to rethink and explore innovation, and this is a pivotal time to be a part of deﬁning the future of tourism for our district.
