On 23rd and 24th March, Pembroke Park will be alive with Wanaka’s first 24-hour Relay For Life. Businesses, families, friends and community groups are coming together to celebrate, remember and fight back against cancer and raise funds for the Cancer Society in our region.

Jane Sharman, the Wanaka Relay For Life coordinator, has been inspired by the support from the local community; providing sponsorships and prizes, offering entertainment and performances, entering teams and fundraising. “Talking to people about why they are involved, the stories that come up are often surprising and humbling. Everyone has been or will be impacted by cancer, personally or through a family member or friend. Relay is an opportunity to walk in honour of someone, to demonstrate hope and determination, and to show your support as part of our community - these sentiments are symbolised by the superhero theme.”

A new workshop launches tomorrow to support parents trying to help their kids learn about money. Hosted by local parent and Registered Financial Advisor, Pete Eastwood, these independent workshops share knowledge from extensive research, trials and developments with his own children, and a life long desire to support the next generation and their understanding of money. “I’m excited to be supporting parents by passing along a few tools and tips to help create an understanding of how money works. When you see something working that you know can help others, it makes sense to share it as a community. Nowadays, a child’s understanding of money starts as they watch their parents make purchases

through a magical plastic card, which provides an endless supply of funds. It’s understandable why our kids ask endlessly for the next purchase on their list, with no understanding of what it really means. As parents, we all want to feel that we are giving our kids the best possible start to life, getting them ready to live happy lives of their own. A strong financial understanding plays a pivotal role in anyone’s future and it all needs to start when they are young with some very simple steps and lots of fun, for both the kids and the parents.” The workshops are open to all parents and will operate on Thursday 28 February at Wanaka Primary School staff room. There will be an afternoon session at 2.00pm and an evening session at 7.00pm. Reservations are not required, simply head along and learn how to make

Wanaka residents will be given a glimpse of the future during town centre activation trials planned for 15–18 March. Over four days, QLDC will be testing out some of the possibilities being investigated through the Wanaka Town Centre Masterplan project. This includes closing part of Ardmore and Helwick Streets and making some changes to the way people move around town. The idea is to better connect the lakefront with the town centre and

bring to life the community’s desire for a more pedestrian and cycle friendly area. A temporary public open space will include pop up activities like team dodgeball, backyard cricket, artisan markets, community group workshops, acoustic performers, street art and interactive lighting, along with street furniture, oversized board games and family activities across the whole site. Alongside this will be a community information tent where people can head along and check out some of the proposed ideas being explored for the Town Centre Masterplan and transport infrastructure.

Deputy Mayor Calum Macleod is thrilled to see some action start to happen on the ground and is looking forward to hearing what people think. “We’re listening to what the community is telling us and have designed a short programme of activities to better link our stunning lakefront to the town centre, allow for active travel and bring our people together to talk about how things might be in the future,” he said. The Wanaka Concert Society starts off its 2019 programme on Saturday 2 March with an outstanding Dixieland band from Christchurch, the River City Jazzmen – a real treat for lovers of traditional jazz. Tony Lewis, one of New Zealand's finest trombone players, who used to live in Wanaka, is looking forward to performing and catching up with friends while he is here and he brings with him a band of top musicians who have a real love of jazz. In the best tradition of New Orleans and Chicago jazz from the first half of the 20th Century, the River City Jazzmen provide a rich repertoire of authentic standards for their audiences. Recent winners of the Christchurch Battle of the Jazz Bands, they pay homage to the great

It’s been a while since I was able to sit down and crack out a ‘Crimeline’ but not much changes, still plenty to write about these days: On Tuesday 19th February, Police dealt with an incident involving harmful digital communications between two young people. With a plethora of options in multi-media these days more of our time is spent with these complaints, many of which deal with property fraud. On Wednesday, Police charged a man with shoplifting from the Wanaka New World and he heads to Court this week. The CCTV there is particularly good. On the 21st, Police were called to a Wanaka address where two people from out of town were having a disagreement. Unfortunately both were breaching their Court bail conditions and were arrested and transported to Queenstown for Court. Police also assisted a female who was having some thoughts of self-harm and came to the Police Station for help. On Friday, Wanaka Police attended a vehicle crash at Makarora involving a motorcycle and a campervan. Fortunately, both were travelling in the same direction resulting in only minor injuries to the motorcycle rider. On Saturday, one of our highway patrol staff stopped a vehicle towing a boat in the Lindis Valley after it was clocked at 145km/ hr. A drink-driving charge resulted as well as instant loss of licence for travelling more that 40km/hr above the speed limit (90km/hr). I wonder if he made it to the start line for the jet-boat race? Also on Saturday, a paraglider was winched off a cliff face near Pakituhi Hut at Breast Hill near Lake Hawea after injuring himself, thanks to all those who were involved in the rescue. On Sunday, emergency services dealt with the fatal jet boat crash on the Clutha River about 2km downstream from the Albert Town bridge. Maritime NZ are conducting an investigation as to the cause of the crash. In the meantime, remember the care required to safely travel on our roads these days – wear seatbelts, safe following distances, be wary at intersections and avoid using cell-phones while driving – distraction is the number one cause of vehicle crashes in NZ. Wanaka Lakefront Reserve After public input and consultation the current Wanaka Lakefront Reserve Management Plan was adopted by the Queenstown Lakes District Council on 30th October 2014. One of the Purposes of the Plan was to, “support Council in preserving and enhancing the outstanding natural landscaping status that the Wanaka Lakefront holds” and an Objective to, “reflect the preferences of the Wanaka community as expressed in the consultation process.” The Wanaka Community Board was elected by the Wanaka residents to represent them, but they are overriding the current Management Plan for the Lake Wanaka Foreshore. We also feel the Wanaka Community Board and the Council, without any consultation with the residents of Wanaka, are treating the proposed development of the Lakefront as though they are the sole architects of the proposed development. This is in complete contrast to what they were elected to do. The different areas of the Wanaka Lakefront in the Management Plan are numbered as Roys Bay 1 – 6, from west to east, and are easily identified,

but these are not used in the plans that have been drawn up.

The current Management Plan also states, “the well used Millennium track continues along the main part of Roys Bay Reserve through to the dinosaur playground”, but because the Wanaka Community Board have not been open and engaging with all people in their discussions regarding this, it is not clear if the Millennium pathway is being retained as planned.

As there are many aspects of the Lakefront plan unresolved, an immediate stop should be placed on any further work. What is set out in the current Management Plan is what the Wanaka people, and visitors who come to Wanaka, enjoy, not some artificially landscaped lakefront area. Wanaka residents and tourists value the open spaces, the natural water front, and of course the amazing views, but recently the Queenstown Lakes District Council had a large three-sided container sited on the lakefront blocking out views of the lake and mountains. Repeated requests to have it removed have been met with stiff opposition from the Community Board, with the

Surely the logical place to display the detailed plans of this important feature of Wanaka, would be at the Wanaka Council Office or at the Wanaka Library? Attached to the inside of the container were two, (now one), colourful laminated Queenstown Lakes District Council posters, stating how much people appreciate the views! Also printed on the poster is the information advertising that – more parking is available at the Wanaka Show Grounds.

More parking in Wanaka! To all our lovely councillors who make the decisions regarding our beautiful town. Has it ever been considered that we could possibly do as other places do when they run out of useable space on the ground. i.e. Begin to stack things up skywards to use the available space above. Horrors, we think. We are not a high rise town! But... We have a rather large parking area in town already on three levels if you want to count the hotel car park, then the town car park behind the old fire station plus the next level outside Print It. How feasible would it be to dig a bit deeper, amalgamate the available space and stack a few layers on top?

The building could provide parking for the hotel, the council, Plunket, the library, the art centre, the post office and all the downtown shops if the plan goes ahead to make the lakefront more pedestrian friendly. Sounds good in theory to have everyone just ambling around the town and down to the lake but not everyone is physically capable of walking from home or all the way from the Showgrounds to do their shopping. Can we have something a bit more accessible for the older folks in town and the young mums and their wee bubs please. Dizzy on the Roundabout!

Dr Susie Meyer is Retiring In 1995, Dr Susie Meyer launched her fledgling practice - Aspiring Medical Centre - as a sole practitioner and Wanaka’s first “lady doctor”. She worked out of a room behind the dental surgery in Brownston St and on her first day of consulting she saw 9 patients. How times have changed! Twenty four years on and thousands of consultations later, Susie has decided that it’s time to move on from general practice and make time for some new challenges and adventures.

We know that her patients (and we) are going to miss her enormously. We’re full of admiration for the dedicated care that she has given to so many people over the last 24 years and for the leadership, energy and commitment she has given to AMC. We are happy for her that she is making space for new things, but are also very sad to be losing her.
