Upper Clutha Lions are holding a Home and Lifestyle Tour on Sunday 7th April. The tour includes exclusive access to the magnificent lodge, “River Ridge”. I’m sure many of you have spied it across the river as you travel between Luggate and Lowburn. Built on the banks of the Clutha River with views to the mountains and of course up the river, it is set in a private and tranquil setting. The lodge was hand crafted in Canada and shipped to NZ to be assembled. It consists of five bedrooms, four bathrooms, three sitting areas, a billiard room and the “Grand Room”.

The Grand Room is an open plan area consisting of a large modern kitchen, a dining area and living room with full height ceilings showing off the amazing Canadian Western Red Cedar. Four more homes feature in the Home and Lifestyle Tour, including an Eco built home, which has a monthly power bill of - $68.00, somthing we all dream of. Tickets are $50 each and are available from Wanaka Mitre 10 or Harcourts. This includes a raffle ticket and afternoon tea. WanakaSAR has approximately 80 volunteers, people from all walks of life who give their time freely in the service of others. Wanaka is the busiest SAR station in New Zealand with more than 50 callouts per year. Although they rely solely on volunteers with no Government assistance, they still manage to have specialist teams for any situation.
WanakaSAR work very closely with Coastguard & Hawea Marine Group. The Wanaka & Districts Lions Club is proud to work alongside WanakaSAR with this year’s 4WD Safari travelling around Bendigo Station. Our flag is still at half-mast to remember those who lost their lives in Christchurch on 15 March. A National Memorial Event to commemorate those killed will be held in Christchurch and across New Zealand most likely on Friday this week. In the wake of this awful event, please expect to see your local police armed for the time being. It’s our aim to keep our community safe and help make you feel safe so we will be popping into schools and places of worship to say ‘hi’ as often as we can. It was great to see such a large turn out to the vigil held in Wanaka and a positive way to show our solidarity. New firearms legislation changes will impact on a number of people in our community. Please follow the instructions detailed and don’t turn up to the station with your firearm without calling the station first. As a firearms license holder please ensure you understand your responsibilities. If you have recently moved or changed address please inform us or the Arms Office in Dunedin. Locally we’ve still had plenty to keep us busy this week. On Friday night a Wanaka man was located in Cardrona after failing to stop when he side swiped a vehicle in Frankton. He was processed for driving with excess breath alcohol for which he will be appearing in court. This person was also breaching court bail so had a night in the Queenstown cells for his efforts. At least two other drivers this week have been processed for driving with excess breath alcohol, one of whom received an infringement notice and the other will be appearing in court. The message is clear – don’t drink and drive. It’s a simple step to help keep yourself, your friends and family on the road safe. A Christchurch man was spoken to by Police on Sunday at the Lake Front after having his wheel clamped by the Council for staying there for the night in his camper. It all turned a bit pear shaped when the driver somehow removed the clamp and told the council he had thrown it into the lake. Thankfully this wasn’t the case and the matter was able to be resolved after an infringement notice issued for freedom camping and the clamp returned. It’s great to see our council out there looking after our water front – they are just doing their job so please be nice. For those travelling around our beautiful area remember the responsible camping sites are set up just for you so please use them. Visit the QLDC website for further information. We are still attending a number of family harm incidents in our community. When things get too much, please don’t hesitate to call someone and ask for help. The health of your family is the cornerstone of our societies and as always, there are support agencies out there so don’t be afraid to call. Have a safe week and keep dry!
