Gathering of Geezers is an evening of fun and interaction with 300-350 guests mingling with over 25 of New Zealand’s best motorsport legends covering many disciplines from rally to saloon, jet boats to drag racing, speedway to bikes.

This annual charity event is now in its fourth year and continues to grow with new ‘Geezers’ invited each year, increased guests and more funds raised.

The charity of choice for Warbirds & Wheels and Geezers is the Upper Clutha Children’s Medical Trust and Geezers is one of their main fundraising events with $12,000 raised at last year’s event alone.

Solely manned by volunteers, the Wanaka based Upper Clutha Children’s Medical Trust

was established in 2009 to support families in the Upper Clutha area who were struggling financially because of the demands placed upon them by their children’s health issues.

Financial assistance has been provided to over 139 families across a diverse range of health needs, general health issues, developmental problems and physical needs are also covered.

Our other charity of choice is the Warbirds Over Wanaka Community Trust and they also receive funds from the charity auction on the night.

The Hawea Community Centre has become a hive of activity lately, with ‘wellness’ sessions increasing in popularity every week.

A sub-committee was recently formed to increase usage of the 100% community-funded building, and now there are events on almost every day of the week.

It all started with someone wanting to use the centre for ‘bootcamp’ sessions, and then escalated into yoga, free form conscious Sunday morning dance parties, and this week pilates is also underway.

In mid June a sober Sunday School GDQFH SDUW\ NLFNHG Rŕľľ IRU ÂżYH ZHHNV which will return again in November.

Committee member Lucy Middendorf said the centre’s activities are targeted at a range of people and ages, including cards and games afternoons. “We looked at what was lacking in Hawea and the time and cost to get into Wanaka for similar activities.�

The committee has also applied for ‘Arts on Tour’ to come next year, and in September will host the best of the Mountain Film Festival as a fundraiser. Last year it was a raging success, they said.

The wellness sessions have been gaining momentum, but the committee was still keen to hear from the public about what other sorts of activities they could have there.

Any ideas can be passed onto the committee via the Hawea Community Centre’s Facebook page.

This week has been a busy week for the Wanaka Police.

There has been a spate of vehicles broken into around Wanaka. A van was entered on Plantation Road and several items taken. Vehicles parked at carparks have also been targeted. A vehicle parked at the end of Riverbank Road and a vehicle parked at the Mt Roy carpark were also entered and items taken. Remember to keep your vehicles locked and remove all valuables.

A female was charged with shoplifting on more than one occasion from New World Wanaka. Police deal with thefts from New World on a regular basis. The security cameras are very effective at detecting any dishonest behaviour. When you get caught shoplifting at New World you will be trespassed from both New World and the Four Square which does not leave a lot of other options.

Police attended four Family Harm (domestic) incidents this week. A local tradesman was arrested for disorder after being ejected from a bar due to intoxication and threatening behaviour. He was initially given the chance to go home but continued to be a nuisance around WRZQ %DQJLQJ KLV ÂżVWV RQ WKH SDWURO FDU HQGHG XS ZLWK KLP EHLQJ LQ the back of the patrol car, in handcuffs.

This coming week we intend to focus on restraints and cell phone usage. So expect to see our guys out parked up watching for those of you not belted up or using a phone whilst driving.
