Following the success of last year, TriWanaka are pleased to announce that this year’s Swim Run Series starts again on Friday 6th December and all Swim Run entries are now FREE to TriWanaka members! The event jointly sponsored by Outside Sports and Racers Edge, is designed to offer an opportunity for anyone new to triathlon, running or swimming to “give it a go”. Whether you are new to triathlon, a social or an elite athlete, there’s a distance for everyone and due to popular demand we now have an U7’s distance and will be offering an extended 1200m distance from January. Join us for our next event on Friday 6th December. Enter as an individual, a team or just the swim – the choice is yours!

MY COMMUNITY NEWS Santa’s on his way to town! Written by: Julia Larkin

The elves are well underway planning and setting up the 5th Upper Clutha Community Christmas Trust Santa’s Grotto! It will be in the new Community Hub this year, so a great opportunity to come along and check this out too. The grotto was the idea of a core group of Christmas loving locals who wanted to spread the joy of Christmas. The grotto has a few thousand visitors over the week and Santa is at every opening time. Many hours are spent planning a more spectacular wonderland each year for everyone in the Upper Clutha and beyond to come and visit. We welcome everyone.

Funds raised are given to local communities to use at their discretion to bring people together and celebrate

Christmas. We also donate $1000 of hams towards the Food Bank hampers given to families in need at Christmas time. Everyone deserves a portrait – one day exhibition. Written by: Mandy Welch Wanaka-based artist Stephen Martyn Welch is a world class portrait painter and he paints people because they deserve to be painted. He has been working on this project for the past six months where he has painted 12 portraits of people that live and work in the Upper Clutha. These people are our everyday people who make Wanaka our community. Welch meet’s all his sitters and has a chat with them to find out what bought them to Wanaka and what made them stay. Not only does Welch paint a likeness but he also captures their essence. What’s different about this exhibition is that it’s on for

only one day and all the paintings are gifted back to the sitters. None of the sitters have seen the works, they will get to see them at the same time as you. Being a non-profit art exhibition Welch will be fundraising for the global ‘EVERYONE DESERVES A PORTRAIT’ project, by having a silent auction for a blank canvas. Conditions apply. Welch has had sponsorship from local companies and private funders who also believe ‘EVERYONE DESERVES A PORTRAIT’.

The book sale has traditionally seen hundreds of people flock to the Lake Wanaka Centre in search of a great read at a bargain price. On Monday 18th November a mountain bike was taken from the bike-stands at Wanaka Primary School. It has a khaki frame with white writing, front shocks and front and rear lights. If you know the whereabouts of this bike please contact Wanaka Police. Also on Monday Police received a complaint of damage to the rear of the ANZ Bank in Ardmore Street over the weekend. A line of enquiry is being followed up. On Wednesday 20th, Police assisted QLDC staff dealing with the illegal parking at the base of Mt Roy. The yellow lines are not to be parked on, as the adjacent paddock space is there for the overflow parking, so please use it. On Thursday 21st, a property on the Lake HĂ¤wea waterfront was the subject of a burglary which was committed by a very determined burglar. A suspicious vehicle was seen in the area around the same time. If anyone has any information about this please give us a call. Later on the Thursday evening, two local males were processed for drink-driving, and a local woman was charged with driving while disqualified. On Saturday 23rd, Police were advised of a small boat coming to shore opposite the Ardmore St bars. The male occupants exited and wandered off into various bars but were not located. The boat was secured on the foreshore. Alcohol and boating, especially at night without life-jackets is a disaster waiting to happen. On Saturday evening of Saturday 23rd, a further three drivers were processed for drink-driving. A far from ideal result for the weekend. Early that morning, Police attended a serious motor vehicle accident on SH 6 near the Wanaka Airport. The firearms amnesty was conducted at Wanaka on 15 & 16 November at the Upper Clutha Rugby Club and the response was very positive. The final date held here in Wanaka is December 8th. You must complete the on-line forms first if you wish to hand in any illegal firearms or accessories. A reminder with the current weather being rather damp and windy, do your homework if you are intending to head out onto the lakes or into the mountains, just so that SAR wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to come looking for you.
