WASTEBUSTERS EPIC WINTER DROP IS BACK! THIS WEEKEND, 6 & 7 MAY

Kicking off at 9.00am on Saturday, Wastebusters will be in full party mode, retro ski'fits at the ready!

The team have been hard at work curating an amazing selection of second-hand ski gear, including snowboards, skis, boots, helmets, and winter clothing. "We're really excited to offer such a great selection of second-hand gear," says reuse team leader Gemma Blackshaw. "There really is something for everyone."

The awesome Fox & Badger and The Little Brewer will be serving up delicious kai and hot coffee all day Saturday, and what's a party without music? We’ll have good tunes and good vibes all weekend long.

"We're expecting a lot of people to come out and have fun with us," says Gemma. "It's going to be a really great atmosphere." With big name brands like Burton, Mons and Salomon, Wasties’ winter stock drop is full of goodies.

“We’ve got the youngsters covered too, you’ll find accessories of all sizes like goggles, hats, gloves and more inside our reuse shop, along with children’s ski jackets and pants.”

Don't worry if you can't make it on Saturday - we'll be restocking all weekend, so there’s plenty of opportunities to find that perfect piece of gear. As always, we encourage everyone to carpool to the event, as our main car park will be closed, with parking available outside the gates. The recycling drop off lane will remain open.

Variation Aplenty in Regional Choir’s Concert

Contrasting songs spanning three centuries feature in the Central Otago Regional Choir’s concert to be held in Wanaka on 13 May.

Exquisite sacred songs by Ola Gjeilo and Morten Lauridsen open the programme, with conductor Richard Madden leading the choir sometimes à capella, at other times accompanied by Alison Frude on piano. Some jaunty movie and show tunes follow, with the inspiring addition of Lyall McGregor (bass) and Peter Doyle (drums).

Two richly harmonic 8-part unaccompanied madrigals in the second half are followed by a lighter selection from Lerner and Loewe and Henry Mancini, and contemporary arranger Mark Hayes works his magic on ‘New York, New York’ and ‘Summertime’, with the rousing finale,

‘Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend’.

Dunedin born-and-raised guest soprano Cathy Highton-Sim showcases her versatility in a programme ranging from Mozart to Rodgers and Hart, and she’ll be accompanied by Otago final year music student and award winning composer, Cameron Monteath.

The choir is delighted to have Wanaka based chamber music group, Aspiring Quintet, to play two movements of Schubert’s Piano Trout Quintet. Members are Norie Haines (piano), Cameron Stanley (violin), Richard Howarth (viola), Brian Budd (cello) and Kate Lovell (double bass).

Wanaka & Districts Lions Club supporting Otago Southland Rescue Helicopter Trust:

Saving lives in our southern communities 24/7, 365 days of the year is daily routine for the Pilots and Medics of the Otago Southland Rescue Helicopter Trust.

The best sound in a desperate situation is the sound of the rescue helicopters arriving with its team of intensive care paramedics.

The Otago Southland Rescue Helicopters operate from bases in Dunedin and Queenstown. They are a partially Government funded community service, but financial support from individuals and organisations in our local communities is critical.

This year the Wanaka & Districts Lions Club have set a target to raise $10,000 by raffling a car trailer with 2.5m3 of firewood. For a $5 ticket you could own

We personally witnessed this wonderful rescue service while catering for the walking group on this year’s Goldfields Cavalcade. We were miles from medical help when one of the group suffered a broken leg. Without the Rescue Helicopter, we faced many painful hours negotiating challenging 4WD tracks at night to evacuate the patient. This kind of help is performed daily by dedicated individuals.

The not-for profit summit has received grants from Central Lakes Trust, Lion Foundation, APRA, NZ On Air, NZ Music Commission and Recorded Music NZ, to help secure some of New Zealand’s top music professionals to perform at Lake Wanaka Centre this weekend.

Participants of all ages are mentored in the art of song writing, recording, production, singing, mixing, film, mastering and DJing, through workshops, seminars and showcases.

Two evening concerts for the public round out the weekend, where tutors and registrants share their passion for music through live performance.

The Saturday evening offers an unforgettable night featuring Anthonie Tonnon, Finn Andrews (The Veils) and The Beths’ Liz and Jon (plus guests). A choir led by Lisa Tomlins supports these outstanding musicians, along with the Kiwi legend Anika Moa on Sunday May 7.

The Yami Showcase has a reputation for providing next level experiences when tutors and participants combine to create magic on stage.

The Upper Clutha Historical Records Society was established in 1985, incorporated in 2010, and registered as a Charity in 2014. Since these early days a group of dedicated volunteers has collected and preserved an impressive library and data base of records and images of the history of this District. The Society has recently embarked on an extensive Oral History Project to professionally complete and record interviews with long standing local residents.
