Now in its fifth year, the Wanaka Trail Ride is becoming a must on the trail ride circuit. Known for its all-abilities tracks set amongst the stunning scenery of Deep Gully, Long Gully and Lindis Peak Stations, this year’s Trail Ride will impress any new or seasoned rider. When is it and how can I register? The trail ride is on Saturday 30 March and you can find registration details at www.wanakatrailride.org. If you pre-register you get the added bonus of a cheaper entry fee, plus you can pick up your pack the day before, so no queues on the day, just rock up and ride! This year’s ride has brand-new trails, the same entry prices as last year, and a back-up day (Sunday 31 March).

Whilst the trail ride is a great day out for all-ages, including pee wee tracks for the little ones, it also raises money for Wanaka Primary School, Montessori Children’s House Wanaka and the local RSA. This fantastic event is completely run by volunteers who are always on the hunt for more ‘good sorts’. MY COMMUNITY NEWS Keen to learn New Zealand sign language? Written by: Fiona Broad Otago Deaf Society are a non-profit group, based in Dunedin, who support d/Deaf/hard of hearing (HoH) people within our community. We hold regular events such as; New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) chatters for those eager to use NZSL and monthly social nights. We co-own a Deaf Centre (with the Otago Association for Deaf Children) which is viewed as a second home for people in our local community. It is a place to gather and share our official language NZSL and feel comfortable among our deaf community. We are visiting Central Otago over the weekend of 1617 March and will be having meet-ups for anyone who is d/Deaf/hard of hearing or has an interest in NZSL.

Your family and friends are welcome to come. On Saturday 16 March we will host a BBQ lunch at 12 noon at Eely Point in Wanaka. We will provide some food, please bring your own drinks and food if you wish. After lunch we will provide a free NZSL taster class for anyone interested in learning one of New Zealand’s official languages. The Great Autumn Apple Drive team are fizzing with excitement at the line-up of fantastic workshops at this year’s community event at the Rippon Hall. A&P Show Cider winner Chris Riley will be giving participants the know-how to ferment their apple and pear juice into tasty cider at home. Continuing with the fermentation theme Llil Lunkry will be sharing her knowledge of fermented drinks and the ins and outs of making kombucha, a fermented tea. Event co-organiser Petrina Duncan says, “With all the buzz at the moment about the health benefits of fermentation we’re excited to be able to share some local knowledge with our community.” Other workshops include: making nutritious bone broth with Ode chef Lucas Parkinson, integrating herbs into daily life with local herbalist Rochana Moon and Ben Elms will share his knowledge about using food forest and permaculture ideas to create a selfsupporting ecosystem in your backyard.

The mainstay of the Apple Drive is the communal chutney making and juice pressing which will run throughout the day from 9.30am to 3.30pm. Last year over 150 people turned 1.2 tonnes of apples and fruit into juice and chutney at the community event. Pirate Pickles chutney master Lorne Knight will return for his fourth year to oversee the big batches of chutney cooked up in the Rippon Hall kitchens. Participants get to take home a jar of chutney and some fresh juice. Bring surplus fruit, a sharp knife, chopping board, small jars with metal lids and plastic or glass bottles and some cash to treat yourself at local food stalls. The 2019 Great Autumn Apple Drive will be held at Rippon Hall on Saturday 23 March, 9.30am – 3.30pm. All are welcome. A $5 donation is much appreciated Workshops start at 10.30am. Well for another year the Show has been and gone without causing too many problems police wise. Many youngsters tried the police tractor at the show which was a great success and we are hoping to recover a child’s toy car from the controls after accidentally being dropped into the gear box. On Tuesday, police received a report of theft of a Go Pro camera from the Cardrona Store on Helwick Street. We have excellent footage of the male involved so if he reads this, he would be wise to hand himself in prior to appearing on the Police Ten 7 show. Police arrested a male who had thrown Coca Cola from a moving car onto a cyclist on the Crown Range Road. Not behaviour to be proud of. On Saturday, police dealt with a family harm matter at Hawea. Don’t forget that there are some really good family support agencies in our communities so don’t be afraid to reach out to them. On Saturday, we also dealt with a motor vehicle collision at the corner of Ballantyne Road and Riverbank Road where a local male has been dealt with in relation to drink driving and is likely to face a charge of careless driving. This may affect his damages claim with his insurer. On Sunday, police dealt with a criminal harassment matter. I have recently been dealing with a local male from our rural community who became so concerned with the freedom camping in the rural area he, in error, pulled the windscreen wiper off a campervan. He has been dealt with regarding this matter and hence forward will now use the appropriate channel of submitting in relation to the Freedom Camping Legislation to Queenstown Lakes District Council. I urge all parties to act within the law and take the opportunity to submit to Queenstown Lakes District Council on this matter, your submission will enable them to estimate the scale of any perceived problems and to legislate and enforce appropriately. Our roads continued to draw our attention over the week. Our team were out there breath testing over the weekend and a large number of drivers had alcohol detected on their breath but were not over the limit. This can be a fine line – please don’t drink and drive. A friendly reminder for those with loads on their vehicles to ensure anything they are carrying is securely fastened so they don’t come loose and into the path of oncoming vehicle users. To keep flowers fresher for longer, after cutting the stems, place them in water straight away (this prevents air bubbles in the stems, helping the flowers absorb more moisture).
