Are you looking for contemporary local artwork? Fourteen Wanaka Arts members are heading to the A&P Show this week on 13 & 14 March and will be showcasing their sculptures, jewellery, photography, prints and paintings. With a large 9 metre2 tent centrally located at N3 near the food court on the McDougall Street entrance, they’ll be easily found with the yellow Wanaka Arts exhibition flags flying. The beauty of this A&P show exhibition is the opportunity to get up close to some incredible local art, mingle with the artists and talk with them about their inspiration, techniques and chosen styles. Some will be demonstrating their talent throughout the 2-day event.
The artists are: Jo Nimmo (painter), Margaret Hamilton (painter), Jenny Hill (mixed media), Scott Johnson (sculptor), Susie Ruddenklau (painter), Jane Sinclair (painter), Deb Ballantyne (painter), Dean Harliwich (mixed media/photographer), Lin Tempest (painter), Freda Ryder (painter), Jill Gardiner (photographer), Rob Norman (photographer), Anna Thompson (jeweller) and Liz Hawker (printmaker). The artists will be on site Friday and Saturday from 8.30am–5.00pm.

The Body Garage, a local yoga and pilates studio, is taking the essence of koha and using it to bring awareness to and support local organizations and charities in Central Otago. “The intention behind koha yoga is twofold,â€? says Prairie Pritchett, owner of The Body Garage. “When we decided to put koha yoga on the studio schedule we wanted to show that the power of small initiatives can make a big impact and also to make the practice of yoga accessible to the community.â€? Every Friday at 11am, new and seasoned students of yoga roll out their mats for an hour of mindful movement. Before class begins, a bit of background is given on the local charity that will receive the offerings collected that day and on the cyclical nature of giving - how the practice of yoga can pay it forward to the community and support good things happening in our region.
Currently, all contributions are passed on to Te KÄ kano Aotearoa Trust in support of their mission of planting native trees and restoring natural habitats in the Upper Clutha region. Others on the list for this year include Friends of Bullock Creek, Kahu Youth, Food for Love and Community Networks. The week just gone has been an interesting one with regards to the incidents local Police have been dealing with, and we now have Wanaka A&P Show weekend coming up, so plan ahead. Police have continued with Operation Lift to combat our drink-driver problem in Wanaka. Over the weekend, 122 drivers were stopped at alcohol checkpoints, 29 of those had consumed alcohol before driving and 3 drivers were over the alcohol limit. During the week Police dealt with a further 3 drivers who were over the legal limit, total of 6 for the week.

In the early hours of Saturday morning, Police located a group of youths in pyjamas in the Trevathan Lane-Kings Drive area consuming alcohol. Most of the group have been identified and parents notified. Police ask that parents ensure they know where their children are and that their alcohol stocks are not being syphoned off without their knowledge. On Sunday a drink driver was located at midday in Lake Häwea. After being processed at Wanaka he returned to Lake Häwea to buy more alcohol but was refused service.
