“Families at War” was our good idea for a display in the library throughout April to remember ANZAC day and also as a reminder of the cost to families of any war. Little did we know that we would be fighting our own war against the Covid-19 virus and our way of doing things would be very different. Not to be discouraged, the members of Wanaka Genealogy Group set about writing their stories in their individual ‘bubbles’ and the display was moved onto the website - https:// wanakagenealogy.weebly.com/families-at-war.html We promote the idea of exploring family history through stories. The stories and 1 poem, revisit our ancestors’ lives during the most difficult of times. We begin with Alexander Whisker in the New Zealand Wars in 1845; follow Alfred Button during the Crimean War; are taken into the poppy fields for ANZAC Day with Pippi’s poem; and find out what life was like after

WW1. The Avondale Tunnellers, HMS Neptune, an amazing quilt in memory of George Stewart, plus a glimpse of how it was to be a prisoner of war during WW2 bring our selection to a close. We can learn lessons from history and be inspired by how our ancestors coped with these difficult conditions. Please do have a look and enjoy reading about our ancestors. Can I start with a big thank you to all those who are contributing to the low rates of COVID spread in our area. Well done. Please don’t get complacent now that the rates of COVID-19 seem to be improving. South Korea did that and relaxed their restrictions early and as a result are having a second spike. We have been speaking to people all week about their responsibilities to help knock the virus out of our community. We have dealt with 4 specific breaches of COVID-19 rules this week, also those who have been given a friendly reminder to think about what they are doing and change behaviours. We have done so well here in the Wanaka area but we still come across people who are visiting others or doing other than the approved activities. Remember that exercise is to be kept local. Family harm is still well up and alcohol is the predominant factor in almost every one of them. We have had some dogs attacking sheep in Hawea. Lock up your dogs up at night and don’t underestimate where your pet may go at night. Youth are also another risk when we know that some youth are meeting up at night and breaking the lockdown. Know where your young ones are. It is your responsibility as a parent to look after your young ones. Please respect your neighbours as we have had too many calls to noisy groups or addresses playing loud music. We are all stuck in our homes and so are your neighbours. I completely understand that for most people tensions are high so please bear that in mind and don’t behave in a manner that would inflame others. Please look out for others and remember:

thought you may like some cooking inspiration while on lockdown, here are some fabulous recipes from 3 of our local eateries... yum!

CHAI SYRUP For all of our Chai Latte devotees missing their brew, here’s our syrup recipe. You can drop the sugar level if you’re being saintly or even sub it out with maple syrup or honey.

GINGER CRUNCH BASE:

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

1/4 cup cardamom pods

Toast the spices in a pan or roast for a few mins in the oven till fragrant, then lightly crush them in a mortar & pestle (or bash them with the end of a rolling pin in a bowl if you don’t have such a thing.)

1/4 cup peppercorns 1/4 cup fennel seeds

450g butter, melted

1/4 cup cloves

6 Tbsp golden syrup

5 cinnamon sticks

2 1/4 cup brown sugar

3 star anise

Heat until butter has melted, and sugar has dissolved 2 1/4 cup coconut 4 1/2 cups rolled oats 2 1/4 cup plain flour 4 1/2 tsp baking powder 6 tsp ground ginger Combine dry ingredients in a bowl Mix wet ingredients with dry and press into lined baking tray. Bake at 160˚ for 20-25 mins until brown. Leave to cool.

ICING: 180g butter 3/4 cup golden syrup 4 1/2 cups icing sugar 6 tsp ground ginger 225g crystallised ginger, sliced Melt butter with golden syrup, mix in sieved dry ingredients and ice base, sprinkle over sliced crystallised ginger.

Pour 3.5 litres of water into a big saucepan with all the spices, 150g sugar and 10cms of grated fresh ginger (don’t bother peeling it). Simmer for ages till it’s reduced by half and your kitchen smells incredible. Put 2cms in a cup, pour over the hot milk/mylk of your choice (or, heaven forbid, add a dash of whisky)…happiness!

HORIATIKI GREEK SALAD A small twist on the classic salad. What should be agreed upon is that a Greek salad is meant to be uncomplicated and fresh – and by fresh: the tomatoes, if possible be sun-ripened on the vine and never refrigerated, the cucumber should be crisp and not limp – not dug up from the depths of the fridge. Use the best quality feta you can find and take it next level by marinating it overnight in lemon, olive oil and herbs.

400g tomatoes (About 6-8)

1 standard cucumber or 2-3 Lebanese cucumbers

•

1 red onion

•

1/4 cup Kalamata olives and 1/4 cup green olive

•

200g Greek feta cheese

•

1/2 cup pure robust fruity extra virgin olive oil

•

20g each of fresh oregano and Italian parsley

•

4 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

•

2 tablespoon fresh lime juice and zest

•

Salt & pepper to taste

Any kind of tomato will do, as long as you have considered the advice above but I use Roma and cherry. Cut in chunky quarters so the juices seep out into the herb & lemon lime juice. The chemical reaction between these ingredients is partly also what contributes to the flavour of the dressing.

2. Cut the cucumber into even slices & onion into thin slices. For the onion, the finer the slice the better, no thank you to chunky onion. 3. In a bowl, add the top five ingredients. Pour 1/4 cup olive oil, lemon juice and most of the oregano & parsley, salt and pepper and mix the ingredients together. 4. Cut the feta cheese in cubes or even slices and place over the salad. Sprinkle remaining fresh parley & oregano over the feta and drizzle remainder of olive oil over the top. 5. Three simple steps, paying attention to the quality of your ingredients is the key.
