With the same passionate people at the helm, Upper Clutha Lakes Trust is now WAI Wānaka. WAI, the Maori word for water, also stands for Water Action Initiative and WAI has plenty of action going on. With the support of our funders and the community, WAI has spent the past 18 months developing a Community Catchment Plan which addresses current and future risks to freshwater across the Upper Clutha. The plan highlights issues facing our waterways as a result of the combined impacts of urban growth, land use change, tourism, climate change and invasive species. The 56 actions in the plan provide a roadmap for the collaboration and partnerships needed to safeguard the long term health of our alpine waterways. WAI is also establishing the Alpine Lakes Research and Education Centre to provide a field station in Wānaka for

New Zealand and overseas researchers, students, citizen scientists and the community. As well as encouraging more freshwater research, the centre will facilitate crossovers and connections with carbon, soil, climate change, biodiversity and sustainability.

The concept of ki uta ki tai (from the mountains to the sea) is important to our community, given our region’s abundance of freshwater and our location at the headwaters of Mata-Au, the Clutha River. Together, we are all responsible for ensuring that the water that leaves the catchment is of a high quality, so that we don’t pass problems on to those downstream. There is no doubt that our community is going to be heavily affected by the steps taken to protect the people of Wanaka and the Upper Clutha from the COVID-19 virus. We have a large number of small local businesses, so let’s look out for each other. We encourage you to shop local and support local. All households should be prepared to self-isolate if necessary, but this does not mean that we need to panic buy. Let’s not make anyone else in our community suffer or go without. After seeing what is happening in other countries and the way the public has dealt with the panic, let’s learn from them and ensure we keep the community spirit and do things the Wanaka way. Look out for your neighbours and others less fortunate in the community. If you need assistance, we have so many wonderful community groups who provide exceptional support. Please reach out to them if you need help. Saturday evening Wanaka Police attended a serious incident in the Cromwell area where a male presented a firearm at Police then stole their patrol vehicle. The event lasted well into the night and utilised staff, helicopters and Armed Offenders Squads from all over the southern district. The offender, who is from out of town, was located in Milton the following morning. Operation Lift continues to apprehend drivers who think they can sneak on home the back way. Four more were processed for excess breath alcohol this week, so think again if you’re going to risk driving. A local male was knocked off his bike on the corner of Ballantyne and Golf Course Rd. Unfortunately the cyclist was unable to get the vehicle registration and the driver drove off without stopping. We get an alarming number of people coming into the station to report internet scams. Some of the scams are very well presented so be very careful when you are paying money to anyone, if it’s an invoice check the bank account belongs to that company. If you are purchasing something online and it seems too good to be true, then it probably is – before you hand over money ask to facetime and see the item first. We are still seeing a number of young children out and about between 1–4am, sneaking out seems to be the new trend at the moment. We highly recommend parents doing a few spot checks on your children during these hours. Or if they are having sleepovers, make sure they are!! A huge disappointment as we hear news that Warbirds is cancelled due to the ongoing risk associated with the pandemic.
