With the aim of keeping fashion circular while reducing local clothing waste, Wanaka Swaps is returning for another amazing weekend of clothes swapping. The swap is a non-profit, community fundraiser with all money raised going towards a local charity that event attendees vote for. Inspired by a close friend who ran a similar enterprise in Canada, Wanaka Swaps organiser Emma Edwards is passionate about conscious fashion and excited that the Wanaka community is so supportive of this event. “Last year we raised over $2,300 both through the clothing swap and our fundraising raffle and was donated to Food for Love.”

Wanaka has been busy over the last week with the Festival of Colour bringing many people to town to soak up an amazing array of events. With the borders opening up with our Australian cousins, Queenstown and Wanaka will be catering for a new wave of visitors keen to see some new scenery and loosen their wallets. Local Police have been kept busy with a number of incidents over the last week, not all for public consumption, but there was a vehicle crash on the Crown Range on the 16th where a vehicle rolled onto its roof at Bridge 6, the driver was shaken up but not injured. Also, on Friday, Police dealt with a drink driver who produced a very high alcohol reading after being stopped on Helwick Street. Over the weekend there was another crash where a vehicle was following too close and ran into the rear of the vehicle ahead of it. A timely reminder for drivers to stick to the ‘two-second’ rule, which becomes the ‘three-second’ rule when roads are wet/during winter. Police also attended a vehicle crash in the Kirimoko area of town over the weekend where a van crashed. The Queenstown driver was processed for drink driving after driving over wheelie bins, letter boxes and vacant sections. Fortunately, when he collided with a large boulder in a landscaped area, the van rolled onto its side, bringing his joyride to a sudden halt. For local cyclists, there is currently an operation being conducted by Police for helmets to be worn and lights used during the hours of darkness. This is for the benefit of both cyclists and motorists as cyclists will invariably come off second best in a crash. A reminder to do your pre-winter vehicle checks; tyres, including the spare; wiper blades; snow chains; ice scraper for all windows and anti-freeze top up. Have a safe week.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS NZ Veterans Brass Band to return to Wanaka for Anzac commemorations COVID-19 restrictions on travel have created an opportunity for Central Otago to once again host the New Zealand Veterans Brass Band during the week leading up to and including Anzac Day.

While the band was of traditional brass band formation, its repertoire features a wide range of music genres, ranging from ceremonial fanfares, marches, world war one melodies, light classics and pop.

The band last appeared in the region for Anzac Day in 2019 and was to travel to the Sunshine Coast in Queensland until covid restrictions curtailed that plan.

During the time in Central the band will perform a number of concerts, commencing in Wanaka on Thursday, 22 April at 2.00pm in the square beside Kai Whakapai, followed by concerts in the Cromwell lifestyle village and the Alexandra Services club on Friday, 23 April.

Made up of retired NZ Defence force musicians from throughout NZ, the band formed in 2012 to commemorate Anzac Day in Passchendaele, Belgium, has assembled every two years to rekindle old friendships and perform concerts and take part in Anzac Day ceremonies. Local resident and tuba player David Leslie, said the band members are really looking forward to returning to Wanaka following a most successful visit in 2019.

Sunday, 25 April (Anzac Day), performances commence with a Dawn service at the Wanaka Lakefront and then the civic service in the Lake Wanaka Centre, before a concert for residents in the Aspiring Lifestyle village.

Hāwea District Anzac Dawn Service Anzac Day, Sunday, 25 April: The Hāwea District Anzac Committee and Hāwea Community Association invite you to the Anzac Dawn Service at the Anzac Peninsula on the Lake Hāwea Dam at 7.00am.

2,779 New Zealanders and 8,141 Australians lost their lives in the Gallipoli campaign: Our country lost 18,277 and Australia 62,000 servicemen and women during the WW1 conflict. Lest we forget.

The ceremony will begin with Hāwea Flat School pupils performing a haka pōwhiri, the Call to Commemoration, our Guest Speaker, Leading Communications Specialist RNZN, Nicole Booth, the reading of the Roll of Honour and the placing of Crosses for our fallen, the laying of wreaths, the reading of a prayer, a poem, the Ode and the two National Anthems. The service will conclude with the flypast of Tiger Moths.

It is a time to remember and honour the service and sacrifice of our original ANZACs and the generations of servicemen and women who have fought in wars and conflicts.

Monthly Meet up for Older Citizens Wanaka St John and Aged Concern have teamed up in the last year or so, to run a monthly opportunity for our older citizens to meet up for lunch and companionship and some entertainment. After a few false starts last year due to COVID-19, the events are now running successfully the last Saturday each month at the St John Rooms, Link Way, Wanaka, from 11.00am to about 2.30pm. There is a morning tea served first, then an activity such as bingo. Last time we also had a beautiful painting exhibition by one of the attendees.

Lunch is served followed by another activity, such as singing of some well known songs. One attendee has a great repertoire on the guitar. It is an opportunity for our older residents to get out of their house for a nice wee break, with some friendly people. Throughout each event we have several of the St John Outreach Therapy Pet ladies and their dogs to help entertain the guests. The dogs provide a great distraction, and the ladies are friendly conversationalists.
