Kahu Youth presents Matariki

Written by: Richard Elvey This Saturday the 25 th of July from 2.30pm until 6.00pm Kahu Youth will be celebrating Matariki once again at the Dinosaur Park. We didn’t think we’d be able to do this, but our amazing team of 5 million, and then our amazing community have pulled together to make this a reality! We’ll have our usual workshops and kapa haka performances, a huge paint it yourself community mural, two bonfires on the shore with fire dance performances and loads more. There will be the huge community hangi, with over 900 portions packed in, and to finish it off we will be having our amazing firework display - so make sure you hang about!

Our local community partners include Wastebusters, Mitre 10, Downer, Heartland Design and Print, the Bullock Bar, Placemakers, ANZ volunteers, Entertainment Solutions, Med Market and Venus Coffee. We are always humbled by the level of help, support and plain old hard graft we receive from the community to make this happen. So come on down on Saturday and share some kai and good times! MY COMMUNITY NEWS Bread tags to…Whales to…Wheelchairs! The Bread tags for wheelchairs NZ organisation has been evolving since launching in New Zealand in February last year. There are now 120 collection points feeding into four central hubs located in Whangarei, Auckland, Wellington and Ashburton. Up until recently the collected bread tags were sent to South Africa via people’s luggage, once there they were made into seedling trays which were then sold and the profits used to purchase wheelchairs for those in need. Due to COVID-19, transporting bread tags overseas with travellers is no longer an option. The long term aim was always to have the tags recycled here in Aotearoa, and national volunteer coordinator Kelly Vollenhoven has now secured interest from several small to medium scale plastic designers and manufacturers.

50% of the sale price of every pair sold will be sent to Bread tags for wheelchairs NZ! It’s a win for Bread tags for wheelchairs, for this talented kiwi entrepreneur and to educate the public on plastic waste.

For Wanaka collectors and the rest of the South Island they will now be sent to Christchurch based designer Michael Fox of Objets D’Fox (ODF) . Michael has designed and built his own machinery and designs, and produces products out of recycled plastic. His first product made out of bread tags are statement whale tail earrings. These retail at $38.50 and can be bought online at www.recycledplasticdesign.com/products/ whale-tail-earrings

It does mean that we now have to sort the bread tags by shape, colour and size so for anyone collecting if they are able to please do this before dropping off at the Radio Wanaka collection point then that would be greatly appreciated. How do you grow a money tree?

Where is the black hole into which our money goes? How do I invest? Answers to these and more will be provided in a friendly and relaxed way at the Money Management course, scheduled to start soon in Wanaka. This fully funded Te Wananga o Aotearoa course helps people define where they want to be in their own financial situation, and provides practical help to get there. “It’s a great course and relevant whether you are wanting to get out of the red, to

save some money, or you’re wondering how best to invest and keep growing your finances. These are life skills that are excellent for all ages and stages”, said course tutor, Mylrea Bell. The class meets one night a week on a Wednesday. The 20 week course is a mix of online and in class – this is a new option so people can stay home by their fire, or save on travel or childcare. This is an extra course in response to local Covid pressures.

Creative Sessions at the Community Hub Starting on Friday 24th July we are

setting up a creative group to help with maintaining people’s mental wellbeing. We are aware that in the current climate there may be people who need extra support for their mental wellbeing, and art can be beneficial for anyone’s mental well-being. The group will be very laid back and consist of tea/nattering/creative things. We have access to pencils, pens, colouring in pages, painting, collage, screen printing, linocut,

dry point etching, jewellery making, sewing, knitting, and plenty of other things. As the group progresses we may look to do an exhibition of any work created by people who attend. The group will run on a Friday between 10.00am – 12.00pm at the Community Hub. Well the second week of the school holidays are over and the children are returning to school, so please be extra careful when in our school zones or passing stopped school buses. It was nice to have the visitors in town over the holiday period and the patronage of the local businesses and ski resorts was greatly appreciated. The week of incidents provided a very mixed bag. Monday police had a report of theft from New World Three Parks and the matter is still under investigation. Two intoxicated drivers were apprehended at the lower level, both received a fine and 50 demerit points. Tuesday saw another person apprehended for driving whilst intoxicated, again at the lower level with a fine and demerit points. Police also received a report of theft of medication, and kept the peace with a tenancy dispute. Wednesday saw Police deal with an accident on the Crown Range, please exercise greater care in the very frosty conditions, black ice shows no mercy! Police also dealt with a noise complaint on Juno Place, please show courtesy to your neighbours, not everyone shares your taste in music. On Thursday Police, Fire and Ambulance attended a vehicle crash on Gordon Road when a car out of control crashed into a parked car. I am pleased to say the driver survived and should be returning home from hospital tomorrow after suffering a broken leg and other injuries. On Friday Police arrested a local person in relation to alleged offences that occurred in a family harm matter and the subject is due to appear before the court. Please remember that there are both victim and perpetrator services, we are happy to refer you to reach out and seek help to stop the cycle. Remember it is winter, drive with care and caution and be courteous to others. Better 5 minutes late on this earth than 50 years early in the next. Stay safe and remember drive safely around schools for the coming term.
