The NZ Mountain Film and Book Festival Charitable Trust is delighted, given the challenges, to offer the 18th festival this year! The event could not have proceeded without the generous support of donations from festival sponsors, funders and patrons, assistance from venues, and of course loyal fans who have purchased tickets both online and for our live events. Although this year will be a scaled-back version, the shows on offer continue to present world-class films and speakers. There are tickets still available for the popular ‘Opening Night’ at the fancy new Wanaka Community Hub: this session features two world premieres, four award-winning films and three films from local Wanaka filmmakers. The venues this year include the beautiful Community Hub. The Hub boasts a large state-of-the-art screen, comfortable seating and a cozy atmosphere. If you haven’t visited this venue yet, this is a great chance! There are also screenings at Edgewater and the Armstrong Room in the Wanaka Community Centre. Free Family Shows are screening at 11am Saturday 27 June and Sunday 28 June at the Community Hub. These

MY COMMUNITY NEWS Free Family Works info sessions this week in Wanaka Have you or someone you care about been affected by the fallout of COVID-19? Do you need some information about local services and programs that could help see you through this recovery phase? The Family Works team will be amongst the groups providing mini courses at the Central Otago REAP event on 24 and 25 June at Wanaka Presbyterian Church, 91 Tenby St. This is your chance to meet the team and learn about how they can help with financial mentoring and budgeting advice, social support, low, or no-interest loans to cover urgent expenses, as well as parenting advice. The Family Works courses are running this Wednesday 24 June 12.30–1.30pm and Thursday 25 June 4.30–5.30pm, and it’s not too late to book! Help is available for everyone – citizens, residents, and visa holders.

National Volunteer Week - celebrating the benefit of working together. It’s National Volunteer Week and the country is celebrating and recognising the collective energies and mana of all volunteers. Year round, volunteers support organisations that they are passionate about sharing their time and energy, whilst meeting new people, gaining a sense of purpose and enjoying their involvement as volunteers. This year has seen a pause in many activities due to COVID-19. During the last three months however, volunteers have rallied to keep communities connected and to answer the call to unite and be kind. We continue to have a strong team of volunteers supporting the welfare response for locals and migrants, and thankfully many of the regular roles and activities are now back up and running. Te Kakano provides a place for volunteers to meet up in the fresh air and support native plant reforestation. Age Concern volunteers are able to return to face-to-face meeting with their companions, as are the Family Works Big Buddies. Our op shops are open and bustling with all the donations received post lock down! Volunteer

Kia ora Wanaka. It has been a sad and heart-breaking week for Police around the country as we lost a colleague in such tragic circumstances in Auckland. Our thoughts are most definitely with that Constable’s family and his close colleagues. It has otherwise been a very busy week for the Wanaka Constabulary. There was a spate of nuisance thefts this week, with 3 push scooters and a bicycle stolen from public places. If anyone has come across abandoned scooters, bikes or other property of value, please bring it to the Police Station so we can reunite them with their owners. It wasn’t a great week on the roads in our area. We attended 3 vehicle crashes and caught 7 people drink driving. The lowlight being a driver who went the wrong way around a round-about and found themselves heading straight towards a Police car. Not what he expected to see during that reckless stunt. What we expect to see are several licences cancelled in the coming weeks as a result of this week’s driving.

Early on Saturday morning, an intoxicated man was unconscious on a suburban street, when he was hit by a slow moving car. This incident could have been far worse, but thankfully there were no serious injuries. However it highlights the risks of not preparing your ride home from town and travelling alone. Falling asleep anywhere on a cold winter night could be harmful, let alone the middle of a road. Friday and Saturday night were busy in town. It is great to see the public out again enjoying themselves. One patron took partying to the next level and created a melee in the Night n Day at 2am on Sunday. He is known to Police and will be having an enforcement visit from us in the coming days. We were very lucky on this instance not to have serious injuries from this unprovoked attack. We can only surmise that this was fuelled by an argument over a thermonuclear pie. Wanaka Police have had to make 2 arrests in the past week in relation to separate family harm incidents. Arresting members of our community is not what we want, however violence is never ok and on these occasions court action has been necessary. We have been pleased to see friends being supportive and recognising when their friends are in violent relationships and supporting them in coming forward to Police. There is a continuing trend for Facebook marketplace frauds. With victims in Wanaka and offenders out of town, and vice versa. There is no security in purchasing online when the money is deposited before the goods are received. Please be cautious. Take extra care on the roads as the ice and snow sets in. Stay safe out there.
