Written by: Celia Crosbie The Wanaka A&P Show is promoting positive discussion around the urban-rural divide by focusing on local landowners who are thinking outside the square with land diversification. ‘Acres of Ingenuity’ is the campaign for the 2020 Show, to be held on March 13 and 14, and celebrates rural enterprise in the Upper Clutha. The campaign features four local businesses who are doing something unique with their land, or the land they operate on, as an example of some of the many diverse agricultural and pastoral enterprises that exist in the area. Salmon farm and restaurant Hook, e-bike and hot pool attraction LandEscape Wanaka, cherry growers and exporters New Zealand Cherry Corp, and honey production company Taylor Pass Honey Co were chosen to feature in the campaign for the 83rd annual Show after a competition to search for winning businesses last year. Wanaka Show event manager Jane Stalker says all four enterprises are utilising their land in unique and varied ways in an effort to create a viable and sustainable business.
“While this was not intentional during the selection process, all four winning businesses have a common focus on sustainability and they have thought outside the square on how best to use their land,” she says. “Most farmers are passionate about the environment and here are some great examples of agricultural-based businesses contributing to the Upper Clutha ecosystem.” Also featuring at the 2020 Wanaka A&P Show is the World Hereford Conference and the International Merino Excellence Conference. The Wanaka A&P Show is renowned for a jam-packed entertainment schedule and this year is no different, with Kiwi kids’ entertainer Suzy Cato, Magic Guy Wayne McEwan, the New Zealand Army Band and Wanaka country-rock band Cemetery Road are some of the acts confirmed to take the stage. And for the first time in recent history, the Show will also play host to a live petting display with Laura Douglas from Real Country, bringing her menagerie farm animals to pet and hear their stories – making access to farmyard animals accessible for those who don’t normally get to experience them. MY COMMUNITY NEWS Wanaka Ladies’ Lunch - Dressing on Trend for Africa The women of Wanaka don’t need to stress over their dress when they come together this year for the inaugural Wanaka Ladies’ Lunch in support of the non-profit So They Can, because, in a New Zealand first, every woman will be provided with an identical dress (different colours) prior to the event. The organisation’s Sew Women Can team of seamstresses have fulfilled their largest ever dress order from their workshop in Nakuru, Kenya, and sent to New Zealand for the event. They have created 100 dresses – same style, 6 different colours - to raise funds and awareness for So They Can’s education projects. Cass Treadwell, So They Can CEO explains, “Wearing dresses made by the women from our So They Can project is a great way to remind people of the direct impact their support of So They Can has on the lives of people in Kenya and Tanzania.”
Building on the trendsetting dresses the luncheon has a theme of Trends 2020 and includes speakers Peta Mathias, So They Can Ambassador, chef, author and entertainer and Larissa Hamilton Head of Design & Creative Director at Corcovado. “We’re really excited to have Peta and Larissa joining us for the event to share with us their expertise and insights on upcoming food and lifestyle trends and also to highlight the work of So They Can”, adds Cass. We have had 2 separate reports of graffiti. The first at Domini Park and the second at The Lake Wanaka Centre. There was a petrol drive off this week where a person has failed to pay for $107.00 worth of petrol. It appears they have mistakenly driven off. This matter has been followed up with the rental company. A disqualified driver was apprehended for driving and had their vehicle impounded. This manoeuvre earns a “Time Extension” - it will be a cold winter on the bike! Several drink drivers were caught again this week as we start to ramp up Operation Lift. You will notice a lot of activity around this campaign in the coming weeks. On that note, Police were out conducting an alcohol check point in Hawea over the weekend. A large number of the drivers spoken to indicated alcohol. One driver was issued with a notice for exceeding the breath alcohol limited. A group of cyclists came very close to being hit by a motorist in the Faulks Road area. The cyclists, who were being supervised at the time, had stopped in the middle of the road just over the brow of a hill. Police will be following this up during the week. Please keep an eye out for cyclists and make sure you give them a wide berth. Likewise, cyclist, please make sure you’re highly visible when you’re on the road. We want to make sure that everyone gets safely to where they need to be. A few of our local young people came to our attention in the township over the weekend after being found drinking alcohol and being unsupervised. This combination with the added factor of hanging around in the wee small hours is a recipe for disaster and no good will come from it. If you have teens under 18, please make sure you know where they are and don’t supply alcohol unless you are responsibly supervising… which means actually be present with them. We had a report of a vehicle in the Northlake area having a rear window smashed over night during the week. Just a friendly reminder to remove valuables from your vehicles overnight as some opportunists do like to help themselves to your property when left unattended on the road side. Lastly please remember that the speed limit for passing a stationary school bus that is dropping off or picking up children is 20kph in either direction. For the safety of our kids please ensure you slow down.
