Destination Queenstown (DQ) and Lake Wanaka Tourism (LWT) are ‘flattening the hill’ in a new joint campaign to encourage travel between the two regions. Flatten the Hill launched July 23 and leverages the colloquial and affectionate phrase ‘over the hill’. Lake Wanaka Tourism’s media and campaign manager Gizelle Regan says the campaign is designed to build local connections and inspire Queenstown Lakes District residents to explore the region and spend time on each side of the hill. Ambassadors Seven pairs of ambassadors that embody our shared passions will showcase the hidden and not-so-hidden delights of each town, encouraging each other to explore and giving viewers an insight into secret stashes of snow, favourite vineyards, or favourite adventures to share with family and friends. Ambassadors include ski stars Jossi Wells and Alice Robinson, chefs Anthony Gradiska of Gibbston Valley and Mario

Rodrigues from Bistro Gentil, winemakers Nadine Cross of Peregrine and Jo Mills from Rippon, just to name a few. Queenstown Lakes Mayor Jim Boult says “it’s great to see this collaboration to support our businesses and community.” “I’ve long held the view that the townships of Wanaka and Queenstown form one district and that each compliments the other. I encourage people from all over to venture to the other side. From Makarora to Glenorchy and everything in between. Now is a great time to tick something off the must-do list as our district moves along the path to recovery together,” he says. Campaign creative was conceptualised and produced by Blend Creative Co and will showcase article content on both Queenstown and Wanaka channels with a special invitation from each ambassador for locals to explore their home with tips and tricks for making the most of a visit.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS Yoga for Everybody! Inclusive & accessible Yoga for all abilities M!NT Charitable Trust is a small group of local families working on a voluntary basis to support those with intellectual disabilities in the Upper Clutha region. With the help of some amazing volunteers and facilitators we have some exciting and positive initiatives kicking off this term, providing a variety of integrated and fun activities for young people. As a way to keep minds and bodies moving during lockdown, M!NT’s Reach Out Programme began streaming weekly yoga classes via Zoom, which proved to be a great bonding experience for young adults and their families during a difficult time. These classes were fun, challenging and beneficial for both mental and physical health.

With lockdown lifting, the students, Charlotte Jackson (M!NT Activities Coordinator) and Josie McGuinness (Yoga Teacher) were determined to keep the yoga enthusiasm going and start an integrated community class to welcome anyone and everyone. A big thank you to Delwyn and

These classes are open to all abilities and will allow people with disabilities to join an integrated class with the local community. You don’t need any previous yoga experience to come and give it a go. This is a pressure-free environment with no expectations. Josie is excited to offer a welcoming and enjoyable learning environment to help people find peace, fun and relaxation on their Wednesday nights. We are kicking off on the 29th of July, we will see you there! The class will go from 5.30 - 6.15pm. Please bring along your own mat and a $5 donation.

Although Aspiring Gymsports has classes to suit all ages and abilities, this term we want to particularly encourage older boys (aged 8 and over), youth (11-13), and teens. Gymnastics is a great basis for building strength and flexibility for boys and girls across all age groups and we have a great facility with some top of the range equipment. The benefits of gymnastics are easily transferred to other sports and of course it’s a whole heap of fun! Boys, youth and teens wanting to learn to do awesome flips and other cool moves

at 6.30pm. Our qualified, experienced coaches will offer the chance to perfect flips and work on other Parkour, Acro and Tumbling moves. Well back into the first week of the school term and we ask you to continue to show care when passing school buses or driving past our schools. Although the majority of the school holiday visitors have gone home now, the work has continued to keep Police busy. The week has seen Police deal with further reports of family harm matters and numerous driving complaints. The roads continue to have ice and care will need to be a priority, winter is still with us and the roads can be treacherous. This week our significant efforts in stopping drink drivers have led to the apprehension of six drink drivers during the week. The occurrence of this type of offending does not seem to be reducing. Unfortunately some of the levels of alcohol we are seeing are extremely high, with one person recording four and a half times over the legal limit. This is very disturbing. Dry July for many seems to have failed, perhaps they can try again and go for an arid August. I would heartily recommend contacting Alcoholics Anonymous or any of the other agencies for support if you are wanting to manage and control your drinking. Senior Constable Cranfield, our Community Police Officer has been dealing with reports of dogs attacking sheep in the Gladstone Road area at Lake Hāwea. If you reside in the area please ensure your dogs are under control to ensure the safety of livestock. He continues to investigate the matter and would appreciate any information to identify the dogs involved. We are seeing a worrying trend of skis being stolen from the ski resorts this year, more than previous years. This is a timely reminder to keep an eye on your equipment when up the mountains. Many of the thefts occurred within minutes of the owner leaving them in the racks. Over the next month and a half, an increasing number of our community will be affected by employment changes as the Covid-19 support runs out. Please continue as a community to show the compassion and support that you did to one another through lockdown. Have a safe week.

Otago Community Hospice Team Doubles in 2020

Upper Clutha has seen significant growth in patients needing specialist palliative care over the last 18 months, so the area has been a key focus of Otago Community Hospice service planning. The Hospice has worked hard across the last year to boost the team to ensure it fulfils its commitment to equitable care cross the region no matter where patients live. The Hospice team living locally has gone from one Care Coordinator in 2011 to four Care Coordinators and a Nurse Practitioner in 2020. This team is supported by regular specialist palliative doctor visits; a spiritual care coordinator, a social worker and a counsellor based in Cromwell. Patients and their families also have access to night carers, a biography service and 24/7 phone support. As part of its broader remit, Hospice also provides GP and primary health care provider support and education. Earlier this year the Hospice brought the Kowhai Programme – education for informal carers - to Wanaka, making a significant difference to those family members caring for loved ones at home.

We want to thank those who have helped us, and we also wanted to let the community know that we will continue to develop the team and the service in this region. The team also work alongside staff at Aspiring Enliven where there is a palliative care bed. All the aged care facilities in the region are supported by the first Southern-based Hospice Nurse Practitioner, Louisa Ingham. Wanaka-based Ms Ingham says living and working in a small community can be a challenge for the team, who routinely met clients or their families in the supermarket or cafe.

‘‘A lot of people ask why you would want to work with death or dying but it is so rewarding, getting to know families and work with them potentially over an extended period of time. You develop a professional bond with families in their hardest times. Our service is often like being a midwife, but at the opposite end of the spectrum. When I started with hospice eight years ago we had 15 patients. Now we sit at around 50, sometimes more.” Otago Community Hospice CEO Ginny Green says the growth is reflective of Wanaka’s demographic.

Otago Community Hospice’s key role is to support and empower people with a terminal illness to live and die well. The Hospice - working alongside GPs, District Nurses, the local hospital team and aged care providers - provides holistic care for palliative patients, looking after the physical, social, spiritual and emotional needs of patients and their families. The majority of patients on the Hospice programme are looked after in their own home.

“We have had to jump pretty quickly to build a bigger team for Central Otago generally, but specifically in the Upper Clutha. We have a strong reputation in the health sector, and so we have been incredibly fortunate to bring on great people, with excellent credentials and get them up and running quickly so that patients on our programme have not been impacted by the region’s growth and are receiving the kind of care they deserve and that we are renowned for.

Having to move this quickly has put pressure on funding. While 56% of Hospice services are funded by a DHB contract, the remaining $2.5 million has to be fundraised. Luckily, we have been well supported by Central Lakes Trust, The Trust Community Foundation, The Lions Foundation and The Upper Clutha Hospice Trust. We also are grateful to the Wanaka BNI chapter which always rallies for our wishlist needs. We want to thank those who have helped us, and we also wanted to let the community know that we will continue to develop the team and the service in this region.”
