Wanaka Community Toy Library reopens in a new location Written by: Lisa Johnston
After a long search and a 5 month closure, the Wanaka Community Toy Library is excited to announce that it has reopened in its new premises in the Tin Woolshed on the Wanaka A&P showgrounds. The library is open on Friday and Saturday 9.30-11.30 and members can borrow up to 4 toys for 2 weeks at a time. The toys at the library are for 0 to 6 year olds. New members are always welcome and there are different options to suit different situations; from annual memberships to 6 week grandparent/holiday-maker memberships. Memberships are set at affordable prices and are offered on a sliding scale to make them accessible to all. The Toy Library also offers a 1 month free trial, and gift vouchers.

valuable rest while their children are learning, developing and having fun. The Toy Library Committee wishes to extend a big thank you to the Upper Clutha A&P Society for their generous support in helping the Library get up and running again. A great big thanks also to the following organisations whose grants and support have enabled the purchase of a whole lot of exciting new toys, storage boxes, rent, internet, and a new laptop: COGS Central Otago, Central Lakes Trust, Otago Community Trust, Lotteries Grant, Aspiring Rotary, Olive and Graham West, D-Fi Croxford Technology and Guthrie Bowron. Thanks to their generosity the Toy Library is in great shape. MY COMMUNITY NEWS Animal Desexing Campaign launches in Central Otago SPCA has launched a Snip ‘n’ Chip campaign, offering free desexing and microchipping to pet owners in Central Otago.
SPCA encourages all Community Services Cardholders in Central Otago with pets that aren’t desexed or microchipped to take up this fantastic offer.
Running from 1 July, the Snip ‘n’ Chip initiative will allow Central Otago residents with a Community Services Card to desex and microchip their cat or dog for free.
Bookings can be made by emailing SPCA at centralotago@spca.nz with the limited time offer, only available until spaces run out.
Every month, thousands of animals are brought into SPCA centres nationwide. Desexing and responsible pet ownership are the only ways to address the cause of unwanted animals being abused and neglected. “Desexing is one of the best things we can do for animal welfare in New Zealand,” says SPCA CEO Andrea Midgen. “Not only will it help your pets have a happier and healthier life, but desexing ensures they don’t unknowingly or unexpectedly produce a litter of animals who are at risk of being abused and neglected.”
“We are so grateful to our participating vets for being involved in this campaign. Locals are encouraged to host a meal for whānau, friends, neighbours, and colleagues in support of Ronald McDonald House South Island. Upper Clutha Lions have kicked off the campaign with a $1000 donation and challenge other members of the community to contribute to this worthy cause. The concept of Host a Roast™ is simple: During the month of July invite your whānau, friends neighbours and colleagues to dine with you for a $20 donation. This will go towards supporting families who require a ‘home away from home’ in Christchurch and Invercargill while needing hospital treatment for their child. While it is called Host a Roast™ participants are encouraged to really think outside the box and host morning teas, lunches, ski picnics, kids cook for parents night, mystery dining experiences
Art as magic A wonderful Exhibition of Children’s Art is being held at the Wanaka Community Hub from 13 - 31 July. ‘Through Our Children’s Eyes’ is the theme for the exhibition and we are thrilled to have contributions from a large number of children from our Upper Clutha Primary Schools; Makarora, Tarras, Hawea Flat and the three Wanaka schools have all contributed to the display of art that will be in the Hub to enjoy. We think of magic like it’s not real. We think of it as illusory and it’s not the way the world works. We are being fooled into believing what we see is true when we know it’s not. Children’s art is the same. It has those magical qualities of showing the world as young people see it, even though it’s not the real world. They draw and paint not
as they see the world, but more from what they know about it. The sky is above, the earth below and the things in between are those people, animals and objects that inhabit their world. The real artist’s concern for proportion, perspective, light and shade and the like don’t often enter into their artistic thinking. Yet, if you look carefully at children’s art it has a balance, a sense of pleasing design, and a playfulness with shapes, colour and texture that makes for the completeness found in a true work of art. Children’s art is worth sharing. We encourage you all to come to the Wanaka Community Hub from July 13th to see the wonderful array of artworks on display. Sincere thanks go to all the children who are sharing their work, to their teachers and their schools. Come by and share their magic.

On the 30th June Police dealt with a couple of Family Harm incidents, issued a Protection Order at Lake Hāwea, and received a complaint of a vehicle doing burnouts at Ruby Ridge. On the 1st July Police, Fire and Ambulance attended a vehicle crash on the Ardmore St lakefront, where an older driver suffered a medical event, crashing into a couple of parked vehicles. He was whisked away to hospital in the helicopter. On the 2nd July, Police received a complaint that a vehicle was driven into a Timsfield property, the driver ramming another vehicle and pushing it about 10 metres. The driver is known and is expected to come in to the Police Station to explain his actions. Police attended a serious incident involving a number of youths, which resulted in a number of charges and all will be appearing before the courts. On the 3rd July the town was very busy during the night with masses of disorder and fights keeping Police busy. Alcohol was the main issue, we wish younger people could learn responsible drinking. Shame that most of the bars in Wanaka encouraged good behaviour, one didn’t! Police also received a complaint of rental tenants cleaning out a furnished property after 70 days of non-payment. Remember to choose your tenants carefully, $$$ are not the only consideration. On Saturday night Police were called about two large cattlebeasts on Cemetery Road, Lake Hāwea. They were hard to see without their fluro vests. Thank you to those motorists that called in to report them grazing on the roadside. They readily jumped the fence back into the paddock like a couple of old steeplechasers! A reminder to farmers that generally a hot-wire is best added to a rickety fence. A local man was charged with shop-lifting at Three Parks New World on Sunday, he ignored the fact that the CCTV coverage there is outstanding, as is the drive to Court over the Crown Range! Only two drink-drivers over the weekend, pretty good considering the ‘flying squad’ were in town on Saturday night, but two too many folks. Lastly, an envelope containing a sum of money was handed into Police by staff from a local shop. If it’s yours then come in and claim it - you will need to tell us how much is in the envelope, and what is written on the outside of the envelope. Great result for the Upper Clutha Rams, not quite good enough by the Highlanders but they were impressive all the same. Have a safe fe week.
