Plastic Free July is well and truly underway, an initiative that empowers people to be part of the solution to plastic pollution.

The global campaign aims to shift behaviours away from single-use plastics. To help inspire and celebrate, Wastebusters has some great plastic-free alternatives to give-away.

“To enter, let us know what top swaps you’re trying via our Facebook, Instagram or in-store ideas board. Whether you're using your own containers for takeaways or trialling shampoo bars, we want to hear it!” Chelsea Holdom says.

Wastebusters is also taking over Wao’s Green Drinks on 19 July at its Ballantyne Road shop to continue educating and encouraging the community on their plastic-free journey.

Wastebusters has put its weight behind a range of other Plastic Free July events, including beeswax

wraps workshops and community Sip ‘n Sews to make reusable produce bags.

This initiative coincided with stage two of the Government’s single-use, hard-to-recycle plastic phase out, which was implemented on 1 July with the banning of single-use plastic produce bags. Wastebusters had great success in handing out hundreds of reusable bags to supportive shoppers on the day at New World Three Parks. The ban also includes plastic plates, cutlery, straws and the replacement of plastic produce labels with compostable ones.

Wastebusters is excited to activate the Plastic Free July movement in our community. It’s the perfect opportunity to trial top swaps that often turn into lifelong habits.

Remember, no matter when you start, every small change makes a big difference, so jump on board and commit to a top swap for the rest of July with Wastebusters!

As the school holidays wind down, we’ve had a nice long weekend to spend with the family. Most have taken advantage of this in moderation, and it was a great weekend in town.

In the past few days, Wanaka has been hit by a spate on thefts and burglaries from residential properties. There is at least one person actively offending in this regard, so Police are following lines of inquiry and conducting increased night patrols. A majority of these thefts have been from vehicles parked on private property. The message to the community is a simple one. It is a must to lock your car! I know it’s Wanaka... but someone is not playing by the rules.

Earlier in the week, a thief attempted to steal two jet skis from a driveway. As a good advertisement for security, the security mechanisms on this occasion beat the thief who spent considerable time and effort without luck. Perhaps for others to reconsider how secure their jet skis are.

Over the holiday weekend there was some unnecessary disorder at our local bars. Primarily it was involving young people only just over 18 (and some under!). Hopefully some lessons learned for those involved and a bit more restraint used when consuming alcohol. Some alcohol related tickets were

An ongoing trend sadly continues, with another repeat shoplifting offender who was apprehended after 16 instances of shoplifting. They have a date with a judge coming soon and some more minor offenders have likewise been apprehended and received appropriate consequences.

Last weekend Police apprehended a vehicle that left a local bar and used Lake Wanaka instead of Ardmore Street as a road. This was dangerous and needless to say, was not tolerated. Nor was the high alcohol reading returned by the driver. He will have some explaining to do. There were also a handful of drink drivers at a lower level picked up at checkpoints. Remember...

Thank you to those who have taken the time to report suspicious behaviour at neighbouring properties. Whether related to our current burglaries or not, these are followed up and are extremely valuable for us identifying suspects for other offending. If it’s suspicious, let us know via 105.

Police impounded a vehicle being driven by an unknown person late last week. We’ll let you in on a secret... we know who they are, they just aren’t keen to give us their name. Police occasionally deal with people who present ‘alternative law’ and don’t wish to comply with the basic laws that you all do. I think we’ve seen it all now, but no tin foil hats on this occasion.

Lastly a moped was stolen from the Upper Clutha Rugby Club on Saturday night. We expect that alcohol may have been involved in this theft and hope that it will be found in the local area. Please keep an eye out for an abandoned moped so we

pets are dreaming about ensure they are fit and healthy and come talk to us about our range of diets suited to their individual needs.

Presently exploring options for postgraduate study overseas, last year Abhinath was o ered a scholarship on the Guildhall School of Music and Drama’s Artist Master’s Piano Performance programme, London.

Abhinath taught himself music theory and often wrote his own music. At Otago Boys’ High School he quickly joined the choir – one of his rst opportunities to make music discovering he possessed perfect pitch. His music teacher investigated more formal lessons and being awarded an Academic Excellence scholarship changed the course of his studies from science to music.

• Some building experience is required.
