Wanaka Concert Society and Chamber Music
New Zealand present internationally acclaimed violinist and violist Mark Menzies, and celebrated pianist Michael Endres performing their monumental programme at the Lake Wanaka Centre.
Power and virtuosity define the fiery duo. Both renowned soloists, Menzies and Endres tackle cornerstone works of the violin and piano repertoire with fresh and thrilling interpretations. The duo’s artistic force is apparent from the opener, Schubert’s 'Rondo brillant', Schnittke’s epic 'Violin Sonata No 2 (quasi una sonata)' which affirms their reputation as master performers, taking audiences
on an exhilarating ride. Salina Fisher’s 'Mono no aware' follows the bold Schnittke, and offers a welcome moment of delicate contemplation.
The final piece, Beethoven’s Violin Sonata No 9, Op 47 has both instruments playing daring, highly virtuosic, concerto style music. Ultimately, the duo’s terrific level of skill and intensity are sure to keep concertgoers on the edge of their seat from beginning to end.

Kia Ora Team, Welcome to the holidays and all the joy that goes with having the kids on hand each and every day to assist with the smooth running of our households.
Great to see the net population of the town rapidly increase, even with the exodus of many locals jumping the ditch looking for warmer temperatures.
Plenty going on for all our emergency services of late, and at this time of year it really emphasises the benefits of the good working relationships between the various groups in the district. Some common themes…
As was raised in some other media publications, shoplifting continues to raise its ugly head in town. Whilst it's well noted the difficulties the current financial environment places on people/households, we have added beef with thieves whose culinary tastes include only prime cuts of fillet and a need to wash it down with five star alcohol. We are continuing to have some good wins holding those criminals to account.
The roads continue to be a challenge for some of our motorists. If the ice and grit didn’t make it hard enough, we still have people making the poor decision to drive under the influence of alcohol. A mix of those just under the limit for a court appearance and disappointingly a number that will be standing in the dock before a judge.
Again, we have attended a number of vehicle crashes where alcohol has been a factor and once again, it will only be a matter of time until someone, possibly an innocent bystander, is impacted by a driver under the influence.
Anti-social driving behaviour has also been prevalent. Legislation gives Police the ability to take strong action against those offenders, including impounding or pink stickering vehicles on the spot. If you are witness to such activities, then please don’t

The good vibe going around town paused briefly late on Saturday night when an individual threw a coward’s punch at a person on the side of the street. Thankfully the injury to the other party wasn’t serious, as there are multiple instances where there have been tragic outcomes to those occurrences. There are still a number of people in the community struggling with mental health. If you know friends or family who don’t seem to be their normal self, be the one who makes the difference and perhaps gets them heading in a better direction. Stay toastie and safe.
Alzheimers NZ and Alzheimers Otago provide ongoing support to locals living with dementia in our region. They rely on support to provide this service, so if you can donate, please go to www.alzheimersnz.grassrootz.com/ create-for-dementia-2023/aspiringwanderers to help continue this service. June has been Create for Dementia month for Alzheimers NZ, an initiative
seeking to raise funds through encouraging people to create. The Aspiring Wanderers, an activity group for people with mild to moderate dementia living in the Upper Clutha Community, has been busy creating artworks for the campaign at their weekly sessions. Creating art involves many parts of the brain as we see, move, feel, think, and organise in the process. For people living with dementia, research indicates that actively creating art can improve their quality of life by fostering increased selfworth, communication, interest, and joy. The artworks produced by the Aspiring Wanderers in this programme have been inspiring and all participants have enjoyed the process of active participation.
If you require further information or would like support, contact Robyn Brighouse from Alzheimers Otago at robyn@alzheimersotago.org.nz or phone 027 4069 067.

Submitted by Tamara ThomasSitting in her lounge on a cold winter day, Linda should have been warm and cozy, but she wasn’t. Instead, she sat in her favourite room surrounded by special mementos and family photos with the temperature at a mere 13°C!
Scared of an una ordable electricity bill, and with only a pension to live on (with a mortgage), Linda didn’t turn on her heaters and with limited rewood, would only light her re when it got really cold.
“Electricity is so expensive, and I’m frightened I’ll end up with a bill that I can’t a ord,” says Linda.
Katrina Kelly, one of our Financial
Mentors and EnergyMate coaches, reached out to Linda, providing practical advice and suggestions.
“As an EnergyMate Coach, I was able to help Linda sort out her heating arrangements, making her home warmer and more comfortable.”
EnergyMate is a free in-home energy service where coaches help people create a power plan that best suits their needs and give advice on heating their home in the cheapest way.
