The Wanaka Travel Club is a friendly group of women and men who gather together on the third Wednesday of each month to hear a speaker with a visual presentation.

We are fortunate to enjoy a wide variety of speakers who present personal experiences of their adventures all over the world. The accompanying photos are shown on a wide screen, with an occasional video as well. After a scenic drive to the Hawea Hotel, we always enjoy the special view of the lake, listen to the speaker’s talk and have a delicious lunch provided by the Hotel. The meal is usually themed to the country being presented. Meetings start promptly at 11.00am, so everyone arrives by 10.50am. Last year we enjoyed some

wonderful talks and photos on a variety of destinations: Namibia, Botswana, Bhutan, Norway, among others.

Adopt Local: The Ōtākou Tussock Cat

This month Cat Rescue Wanaka are celebrating their 5th birthday, and with it the launch of their new ‘Adopt Local’ logo. A combination of ‘Shop Local’ and ‘Adopt, don’t shop’, this was developed to encourage people to adopt locally, rather than buy kittens o the internet.

The CReW work hard to rescue Upper Clutha waifs and strays, and rehome them as the loving companion animals they are. Over 90% of these rescued animals are what many would refer to as a tabby, but cat rescuers in these parts know them as the Ōtākou Tussock Cat (OTC, or Tussock Tabby, for short).

Their tabby coats may be any variation of

the standard ticked, marble, or mackerel design, and some have hues of ginger coming through. But when it comes to personality, well, that can range from Abyssinian to Turkish Van. CRW are desperately seeking forever homes for their many current OTC’s as the next kitten season is fast approaching. Can you help?

Midwinter Merriment for Local Seniors

Seniors in the Upper Clutha are cordially invited to a Midwinter Merriment event on Saturday, 26 August, from 2.00 – 4.30pm at the Wānaka Community Hub.

This unique afternoon will feature a luxury high tea from Well Bean Café Wānaka, with dessert canapés from Pembroke Patisserie, and live music from the Wānaka Ukuleles and Anna van Riel. Guests are welcome to bring along their nearest and dearest for what will be a great chance to catch up with friends, meet some new ones and get those toes tapping!

This event is hosted by Community Networks/LINK and the Reconnecting Seniors Network, as part of the

Reconnecting Seniors project. Funded by Te Hau Toka, this project aims to help seniors get and stay connected in their community and at home, supporting ‘active ageing’, social participation and healthy lifestyles.

We only feature Wanaka and surrounding businesses to encourage our visitors to stay and explore. The advertising rates are for a full year of advertising. The prices are less than advertising a full page or double page in local advertising publications which circulate for 1 week. This year we have had to print extra Wanaka Info Guides as their popularity has grown so much, 1600 were printed and we are almost out already. We will be printing 2000 for our next issue to keep up with growth.

The public are advised that the Hidden Hills Residents Association and Preston Pest Control intend to apply carrot baits containing the pesticide Pindone via ground application on private property within the Hidden Hills subdivision. As the properties are unfenced this notice serves as a courtesy to dog owners using this area. Bait areas will be indicated with flags.
