CLEANING UP THE CARDRONA
Join WAI Wānaka for Cleaning up the Cardrona, a community river clean-up event along the Ōrau /Cardrona river in partnership with Love Wānaka.
The event is about more than picking up rubbish. It’s an opportunity for the community to come together, take meaningful action, and spark conversations about the challenges facing local lakes and rivers.
“These clean-ups may seem like small steps, but they are a great way to bring people together and inspire action for long term change,” says Jaylene of WAI Wānaka. “Stormwater runoff, limited research, and the pressures of a growing population are all examples of things we can’t afford to ignore.”
At the last Cardrona clean-up in June, over one tonne of rubbish was removed from the area.
“We were blown away by the turn-out at our last Cardrona clean-up, over 50 volunteers joined in, many from local businesses,” says Jaylene. With support from Placemakers Wānaka, who are providing a sausage sizzle, as well as Wānaka Civil and Interlink Timber Solutions, who are bringing trailers and covering disposal costs, this promises to be a rewarding and impactful event. Volunteers can park at the Cardrona River bridge off Ballantyne Road, just past Wastebusters. “All are welcome – we encourage local businesses of the area to join in on the mahi too before the holidays commence,” says Jaylene.
WAI asks volunteers to bring weather appropriate clothing and gloves if possible. Children are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult.

Pembroke Womens Club Wanaka
The Pembroke Womens Club was formally known as Probus, a name many people will remember. We invite women in the surrounding areas of Wanaka to join once a month for an informal meeting listening to guest speakers followed by morning tea.
Our guest speakers are often local people who provide informative and entertaining talks on current issues in our area or o er an insight into their speci c realm of expertise. This years speakers have entertained us with a wide variety of topics from health, charity, conservation, and farming to international trade fairs.
We began the year with a picnic in Old Station Park, a fun outing which we will repeat in February. One meeting was a bus trip to Ayrburn where we enjoyed a lovely midwinter lunch. Another was a movie morning.
We aim to foster fun and friendship amongst semi-retired or retired women, looking to have a morning out once a month and leave with a conversation to be continued.
We look forward to you joining us in February for a picnic in the park followed by a year of fun and exciting speakers.

Roys Bay ski lane closure
Public notice is hereby given to temporarily alter the designation of the Roys Bay ski access lane between 20 December 2024 and 10 February 2025 pursuant to the Queenstown Lakes District Council’s Navigation Safety Bylaw 2018.
The temporary revocation of the Roys Bay water ski access lane is in consideration of the influx of swimmers in this area over summer. This raises high risk safety concerns for passive users if encountering a vessel using the ski lane for its designated purpose.
Access lane rules (Clause 42 of the Navigation Safety Bylaw 2018) no longer apply during this period, and swimming is permitted. If entering this area between these dates, please note that no vessels (including those towing a water skier) are permitted to exceed 5 knots within 200 metres of the shore.

With summer now upon us it pays to be mindful of activities that can inadvertently cause a fire. If you are planning on using tools such as a chainsaw, lannmowers, brushcutters etc then consider the following: Check the conditions. Try to avoid mowing in hot, dry, windy weather. It only takes a tiny spark to ignite dry grass.
Keep an extinguisher handy and know how to use it.
Once you have finished mowing or cutting come back a half an hour later to check nothing is smouldering or alight.
Once the work is done don’t park or leave your mower in long grass. Heat from the exhaust or working parts may ignite the dry vegetation. Finally, on behalf of the Wanaka Volunteer Fire Brigade I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas and all the best for the coming new year.
