Women (and men!) of the Upper Clutha, please join us in celebrating International Women’s Day with food, conversation, and fun – all for a great cause. The Wānaka Upper Clutha Lions Club is hosting an International Women's Day dinner on 13 March. IWD is a global recognition of women’s economic, social, cultural, political accomplishments in a world still striving for equity. This year’s theme is 'Inspire Inclusion', and our guest speaker Kathy Dedo will discuss this as well as her own professional and personal journey through countries, careers, and communities. Kathy is known to many as a local community champion, now working in governance at regional and national levels.

The Wānaka Upper Clutha Lions Club is a service group that supports many community causes. The proceeds from this event will be donated to the Upper Clutha Maternity Trust for development of the new Albert Town birthing unit – a much needed facility for young families.

LPG Delivery Driver Rockgas Wanaka currently require a full-time LPG Delivery Driver. Rockgas Wanaka is a locally owned and operated family business based in Wanaka. We have an exciting opportunity available for a new member to join and help grow our business. This role’s key priority is to safely and efficiently deliver LPG cylinders to our commercial and residential customers whilst building strong and lasting relationships. Other daily activities include Filling LPG Cylinders, vehicle safety checks, loading product onto the truck, organising delivery runs and, ensuring the highest level of health and safety is maintained for you, the wider team and our customers. MY COMMUNITY NEWS Record Numbers Competing In Aotearoa Bike Challenge A record number of local workplaces and riders in the Queenstown Lakes District have entered this year’s free Aotearoa Bike Challenge, with a full calendar of exciting local events throughout February for the first time in the Upper Clutha. As well as the usual chance to win national prizes, on offer in Wānaka are a host of free activities including Coffee & Kai Pit Stops (Wednesdays at Dino Park 7.00 - 9.00am), Bike Repair Clinics at the Wānaka Craft Market (Sundays 10.00 - 2.00pm), Little Pedallers Bike Confidence Sessions at the Wānaka Recreation Centre (Wednesdays) and Bike Wānaka Women’s Social Rides (Wednesdays). Local businesses can also access free E-Bike taster sessions. (All run by The Lightfoot Initiative Charitable Trust, in collaboration with Wāo.)

Hāwea food forest working bees.

The Hāwea Food Forest was set up in 2012 to establish and maintain a community fruit orchard in the Hāwea Domain. A trust was formed to run the Food Forest and two of the original trustees are still actively involved. Set within three hectares of greenery, the original fruit trees are now reaching a good height and producing fruit which is used by the volunteers who help maintain the orchard. Many of the trees have been grafted by the team and a wide variety of heritage apples are now growing. When mature, the food forest will supply produce to the wider community and become an educational hub for horticulture. Working bees are held every Saturday from 10.00am to 1.00pm with a shared morning tea. All are welcome. Visit the Hāwea food forest Facebook page for more information.

Graham & Olive West Charitable Trust Protecting Native Species with Predator Control in the Makarora Valley The Department of Conservation (DOC) plans to control rats and stoats via the application of aerially applied cereal baits containing sodium fluoroacetate (1080), in the Makarora area. This operation is scheduled for clear weather windows from 1 March 2024.

Description of the Area

Applications are now open for Upper Clutha not for profit and charitable organisations to apply for grants. Why We Are Controlling Introduced Predators

A heavy seeding event, known as mast, has occurred in many New Zealand forests this year. This natural event, that should benefit native species, has been hijacked by introduced predators as rodent and stoat numbers have skyrocketed from the increase in food available. Rodent numbers have reached critical levels, and we need to respond with a predator control operation. If we don’t act, rare native species such as mohua, whio, kākā, kakariki, rock wren/ pīwauwau, and bats/pekapeka will suffer heavy losses or even local extinction. Through sustained predator control, there is a big increase in breeding success for birds, their food source is more abundant, and the forest is healthier.

Method of Control

Cereal baits will be sown with helicopters at a rate of 1.5kg/ha. Baits are cylindrical, approx. 30mm long and 16mm wide. The operation begins with the distribution of non-toxic pre-feed bait pellets (sandy brown). This prepares rodents, mustelids, and possums to eat the toxic baits which contain 0.15% biodegradable 1080 and are dyed green. Toxic bait will be applied 1-6 weeks after the pre-feed. 1080 is poisonous to humans, domestic and game animals. Risks can be eliminated by following these rules: • DO NOT TOUCH BAIT • WATCH CHILDREN AT ALL TIMES • DO NOT EAT ANIMALS FROM THIS AREA or within the buffer zone outside the treatment boundary. The buffer zone is 2km for deer and pigs, 200m for rabbits, and 1km for hares, tahr, wallabies and possums. • Poison baits or carcasses are DEADLY TO DOGS. Observe these rules whenever you see warning signs about pesticides. These signs indicate pesticide residues may still be present in baits and poisoned carcasses. When signs are removed, normal activities can resume. If in doubt, check with your local DOC Office. Please report suspected vandalism or unauthorised removal of signs. If you suspect poisoning, please contact: • Your local doctor/hospital/medical centre OR The National Poisons Centre: 0800 764 766 (urgent calls) or 03 479 7248 Or dial 111. • Seek veterinary advice for suspected poisoning of domestic animals.

Temporary Closure of Areas

During this predator control operation, the Blue Pools Carpark will be closed, as well as the immediately surrounding public conservation land. The closure will last two days for the pre-feed application, and two days for the toxic bait application 1-6 weeks later. Before entering the operation area after 1 March 2024, we recommend you check the DOC website, or contact the Wānaka Visitor Centre for more information on closures. Update on the Month of January from our Fire Service January saw a much welcome decrease in calls following a busy Christmas period, we love that! While the vegetation fire count has been relatively low, medical emergencies and public assistance calls kept our dedicated volunteers on their toes. We appreciate the swift response from our team members and the cooperation of the community. Despite the recent rain, the high fire risk

persists. Dry ground conditions can quickly escalate incidents, so please keep an eye on the fire risk indicators posted around town, and exercise caution when engaging in activities that could potentially ignite fires, especially in windy weather.
