CREATING WITH WOOL

Wanaka Creative Fibre group will be encouraging the resurgence of traditional fibre skills once again on Wednesday, 23 August 2023 from 10.00am at the Wanaka Community Hub.

We are inviting everyone interested in wool crafts to come along and join with us and other like-minded people to share the camaraderie that sharing skills engenders. Or, just come along to see what happens when we get together.

You will be most welcome and we’ll be on hand to show you around.

Even better, if you would like to try your hand at spinning, weaving or needle felting, there will be

opportunity for that too!

It appears there is a resurgence of interest in spinning wool, so we are catering for that – with extra wheels available and mentors to show how it’s done.

However, if you’ve got a wheel of your own feel free to bring it along, there will be plenty of room.

A demonstration in how to handle wool from the fleece will happen about 12.45pm. We will have our experts from Tally Ho Wool Suppliers there showing how it’s done; they’ll also bring supplies to purchase.

We can’t avoid talking about the weather, great to see some white stuff on the hills lately and all the positives its presence brings to the area. Fingers crossed for a bit more over the next few days.

On the topic of snow, a timely reminder to check that the chains you have in your vehicle fit the tyres and just as importantly that you know how to fit them. A dry run in the comfort of your garage might save some considerable numbness in the fingers come the next big dump.

A few other road matters...

School buses – School appears to be so darn exciting these days that kids seem overwhelmed with eagerness to leave the warm embrace of their parents to catch the school bus, that they may just forget to look for cars when crossing the road. So, as a great back up plan, all vehicles, traveling in either direction are required to travel at no more than 20km/h when passing a stationary school bus.

Please keep an eye out for them! If their health and welfare isn’t a good enough reason to slow down, then the knowledge that if you’re caught travelling past them at more than 70km/h then you face an instant 28-day loss of your driver licence plus a hefty fine.

Bike helmets and seat belts; they’re to be worn for your own protection. If you need no other motivation then pause and think how they might make a huge difference in the end result in a crash. Does the thought of someone else having to assist you cleaning up after basic bodily functions for the rest of your life not make you want to make that small and simple effort?

We would encourage folk to report instances of unsociable driving behaviour such as burnouts or unnecessary acceleration. If you can safely obtain footage, it can be golden in assisting us with our inquiries.

We had an incident last week where a driver thought it would be a good idea to do some doughnuts at the freedom camping area near Luggate’s Red Bridge. In the process they proceeded to smash several windows in the campers’ vans. Big shout out to the members of Wanaka’s Community Patrol who located the vehicle in Wanaka later in the evening, which allowed Police to locate and impound the vehicle responsible. The already disqualified driver will be appearing in court later this month on several charges. The volunteers of the patrol are of great assistance to Police and their

We had some MAC members of Students Against Dangerous Driving (SADD) accompany us on an impairment checkpoint last week. Great for them to get out and reward those drivers who were sober coming through the checkpoint, but once again we still have people coming in over the limit. Please plan ahead and come up with some better transport options

Regarding good planning, if you’re a learner/restricted driver, then know the conditions that come with that licence. Whilst we understand the good intent of wanting to transport your friends about town, it’s going to be you facing fines and demerit points when we pull you over.

We’ve had a few unsavoury instances in town with alcohol a large factor. Look after your mates and tell them when it’s time to leave. When bar/ security staff ask you to leave, don’t argue the point. They risk punishment if they serve or have intoxicated people in their establishments. Have a safe week out there!

Out & About Wānaka: Pride Street Party

A group of Wānaka locals are throwing a Pride Street Party to remember and want you to come and celebrate too. Saturday, 9 September 2023 will see the Lake Wānaka Centre and Bullock Creek Reserve turn into an all-inclusive street party, to showcase love and acceptance of LGBTQI+ diversity and visibility in the community. If it’s wet weather, the party will go on indoors!

Fundraising for the UCRTUA

A fundraising campaign looks to be coming up $15,000 short of the $75,000 target for the installation of a repeater station on private land to provide coherent VHF coverage on Lake Hawea and its surrounds in time for the coming summer season.

The not-for-pro t Upper Clutha Radio Telephone Users’ Association (UCRTUA) has made better VHF coverage a priority, says chair Ian Brown.

The UCRTUA is a charitable trust operating radio services from Mt Roy and can provide 90% coverage on Lake Wānaka but only 25% on Lake Hāwea - from the township to about Timaru Creek.

“There’s no cellphone coverage up there either,’’ Ian says.

the road to Makarora and the Hunter Valley side are dead areas, as is up the Hunter River. The existing communication problems have implications beyond the needs of individual emergencies.

Should a major earthquake or storm strike, the area would be totally reliant on the Mt Roy facilities as the only means of basinwide communications.

The Upper Clutha A&P Society is calling for community-minded locals with a passion for agriculture and the Wanaka A&P Show to join our board.

Here's your chance to contribute to one of Upper Clutha’s longest-serving non-profit organisations - the iconic Wanaka A&P Show.

What is the Wanaka Info Guide?

The Wanaka Info Guide has been informing visitors for 32 years, it is a premium magazine distributed annually and free of charge to the guest rooms and receptions of local accommodation providers along with other reception areas of service providers in our area. It is also online at www.wanakainfoguide.co.nz This is the ‘go to guide’ of where to go, what to do, where to dine and shop when visiting our beautiful region. Include your business so visitors know who you are, what you offer and where to find you.

Remember what it is like to arrive at your destination, pour a drink or make a cup of tea and look through a room compendium to see what is available and what is happening? Now that our region is humming with visitors again, it is a great time to be involved in this comprehensive Wanaka Info Guide.

The Wanaka Info Guides will appear in the rooms before Christmas and are replenished throughout the year. We only feature Wanaka and surrounding businesses to encourage our visitors to stay and explore. The advertising rates are for a full year of advertising. The prices are less than advertising a full page or double page in local advertising publications which circulate for 1 week. This year we have had to print extra Wanaka Info Guides as their popularity has grown so much, 1600 were printed and we are almost out already. We will be printing 2000 for our next issue to keep up with growth.
