Adventure Awaits: NZ Mountain Film & Book Festival Opens in Wānaka this Friday

The NZ Mountain Film & Book Festival opens at the Lake Wānaka Centre this Friday, 21 June and runs until Tuesday, 25 June. Get ready for some inspiring, thought-provoking and heart-thumping entertainment from some world-class adventurers, filmmakers and writers - including some familiar faces! If you love adventure films and books, hearing about incredible journeys to extraordinary places, and learning about different cultures and the environment, then there’s something on the programme for you. Why not bring your young adventurers along to one of the free, one hour family shows?

It's the first time most of these films have been shown in New Zealand and several are also making

their world premieres. You’ll have a chance to meet some of the award winning filmmakers and writers and listen to inspiring guest speakers. Simone Moro, one of the world’s most accomplished mountaineers, joins the speaker panel, along with Wānaka’s own Guy Cotter who will share his experiences guiding on the world’s highest peaks.

As NZ’s only adventure film competition, the NZMFF is proud to provide a platform for Kiwi creatives to showcase their talents. Wānaka’s Finlay Woods took out the award for Best NZ-Made film, working alongside another well known local skier Craig Murray. Be sure to check out their film 'Terra Incognita' in the 'Pure NZ Tahi' session on Saturday afternoon.

Wanaka Futsal Kicks O Another Season

WHAT: Wanaka Futsal (indoor football) competition open for all-comers

Each winter over a hundred and fifty players gather on a Sunday night to compete in one of Wanaka’s longest running team sports competition. Indoor football has been played in Wanaka for well over twenty years. In recent years it has been held at the Wanaka Recreation Centre and is under the Wanaka Futsal banner. Up to sixteen teams, consisting of players aged from fifteen to fifty, from all over the world, compete for the title of the WF League of Champions.

Not everyone is there to win. There is a real mix of ability you don’t have to be a professional footballer to play - it is only a bit of fun really. It is the taking part that counts.

The rst Mums and Bubs Pre-Loved Market is about to kick o , o ering local mothers a unique shopping experience for maternity, baby, and kids’ essentials. Organised by mums Kirstin and Emilie, this event transforms a simple garage sale into a vibrant community market.

Scheduled for Saturday, 22 June from 10.00am – 1.00pm at The Venue Wanaka, this market allows mums to buy and sell gently used baby and kid items, fostering connections among local families while cutting down on waste.

“We’re excited to o er a local solution,” says Kirstin. “Most baby shops are hours away, and online shopping can be a gamble. This market lets mums see what they’re buying and meet other local mothers.”

Come nd a bargain and experience eco-conscious shopping at a market celebrating friendship and motherhood.

Sunday evenings see each team play one game until the ‘round-robin’ competition determines the best futsal team of Wanaka. The games are only around twenty minutes long but it is amazing how much exercise you can get in such a short time.

If you would like to get involved come to the WRC on Sunday, 23 June for the rst friendly game evening. Everyone who comes along will play. There is another friendly night on the following Sunday and then the tournament kicks o for real. It’s not too late to get a team together, or just come and join a team.

Better Building Working Group (BBWG) News

Did you know that the Queenstown Lakes District is the fastest growing district in all of New Zealand? It grew by a staggering 8% in the year ending 30 June 2023. That’s nearly a whole 6% more than the national average.

Such large growth has led to a soaring demand for housing across the district, and because of that the amount of construction across the district has also expanded substantially.

While there’s no stopping the districtwide increase in development, we need to make sure that it’s being done in a sustainable and healthy way.

That’s where the Better Building Working Group (BBWG) has its calling. Composed

of builders, suppliers, architects and others, the group looks at how to implement sustainable practices in the construction industry across our district.

In addition to meeting on a monthly basis to cover new developments and explore potential projects, the group also holds awareness campaigns and events. The next event will showcase circular economy principles from Sustainable Business Network’s General Manager James Gri n, and will be held at Dunlop Builders in Wanaka, 5.00pm on 26 June. After that, CEO of the NZGBC, Andrew Eagles will come to Queenstown on July 16 to further the conversation.
