Expanding the Trapping Network Volunteers from Wanaka Backyard Trapping have been expanding their trapping network during the last few months. A total of 86 traps have been installed in five new locations: (1) along the Outlet Track, (2) Hikuwai Loop Track, (3) between Wanaka Yacht Club and the Scout Den, (4) next to the Wanaka grebe breeding area, and (5) around the disc golf course near the lower Cardrona River. These new trap networks are reducing the density of mammalian predators in biodiversityrich forests and shrublands near water, where many of our native birds breed. Dozens of possums, a few rats and a huge stoat have already

been removed on the new trap lines! New volunteers receive training from an experienced trapline coordinator and are placed onto a roster. If you enjoy walking or biking our local tracks and would like to get involved in a conservation initiative which makes a positive difference, contact Petrina (see below) for more information. Additionally, the Wanaka Trap Library has supported more than 50 households to start backyard trapping since May 2022. Many borrowers have ended up purchasing a trap to continue trapping long-term. Queers & Beers NZ 1 in 20 New Zealanders identified as LGBTQIA+ in the 2020 Household Economic Survey done in 2020. This excludes those living in NZ on working holiday visas and tourists which can make up a sizable portion of our local population, particularly here in the Queenstown Lakes District. Upon arriving to the Wānaka area in 2019, I found it difficult to find fellow LGBTQIA+. Not to say nothing was happening at all, there just weren’t any consistent events or socials. This got me thinking, why not start one myself? And so Wānaka’s monthly Queers & Beers social was born. We cycle through all of our local breweries including B. Social (B.Effect), Ground Up, Rhyme x Reason, and Wānaka Beerworks Brew Bar. Over the last year we’ve had attendees ranging in ages from 18-78 (shout out to our oldest lesbian in

the village) and from all over the world. Recently, we’ve had some returning Wānaka locals who have expressed deep gratitude that there is finally a space in their hometown to meet and connect with the others in the rainbow community. Hearing such feedback has inspired myself and others to continue to develop events such as the Pride Street Party (OUT&About Wānaka) alongside a range of events throughout the year to develop stronger visibility and support of our vibrant rainbow whanau. Please join us for our final social of the year on 20 December from 6.00 - 9.00pm at Rhyme x Reason Brewery. Remember our queer socials are judgment-free and all-inclusive events. Everyone is welcome to join our community, no matter what gender/non-gender, race, or religion you identify/present yourself as.

WAI Wānaka is a community organisation dedicated to preserving waterways and our natural environment in the Upper Clutha region. Merry Christmas from the Wanaka Volunteer Fire Brigade! We’re about to enter our busy season, with El Ninõ summer conditions meaning stronger winds and dry ground, a perfect recipe for scrub fires. Anyone who’s seen ‘scrubbies’ before will know just how fast they can move when conditions are right, so please be vigilant when you are out and about, particularly in the Mt Iron region and around the Lake.
