THE COMMUNITY SHUTTLE TRIAL

Tired of morning traffic or the cost of fuel?

Wanting to reduce your carbon footprint? Get on board the $2 Community Shuttle Trial. The second and final three-month trial is running Monday-Friday until 18 August.

With funding from Queenstown Lakes District Council and Lake Wānaka Tourism, Community Networks/ LINK and Yello! are delighted that so many partners have come together to once again make public transport a short-term reality in the Upper Clutha. The trial aims to refine elements of the first service, which ran September – December last year, in response to community feedback. It will also test new options and gather different data to inform longer-term public transport planning. Otago Regional Council are particularly interested to see the impact of the shuttle on decarbonisation and

vehicle kilometres travelled (VKT) reduction.

There are two services: a streamlined HāweaWānaka express route, with travel time totalling 25 minutes; and intra-city loops connecting the Health Centre, Three Parks, Albert Town, Northlake and Anderson Road to the CBD. The price per trip is $2, and while booking is still encouraged to guarantee your seat on the express service, riders can simply wait at a marked bus stop. There are 11 passenger seats on the bus with rear bike rack for two bikes.

As always, the more you use it, the stronger the evidence that the Upper Clutha needs a permanent public transport service. It’s vital that riders complete the feedback survey, either online or on paper, to capture VTK reduction data. Welcome to the icy grips of winter which brings with it the highs of a bustling town but the lows of the pesky inversion layer. Tough times for all those who are relatively solarpowered but I’m sure the blue bird days can’t be far away...

Great to see the first of the local ski fields up and operating on Saturday and with it some fashionably(?) bright outfits gracing the town in the evening that followed. Fantastic for our local businesses to see lines of well-behaved patrons keen to enjoy a night out. Long may the good behaviour continue.

A few common trends coming to our attention over the past fortnight...

Several vehicle accidents occurring in areas where ice and grit were present. Add a spoonful of speed to those slippery suckers and you’ve got all the ingredients for a bad experience. Alcohol has been a contributor of two crashes. On both occasions the drivers were well over the limit and extremely lucky to walk away from their vehicles.

Another intoxicated driver was fortunate they only made it a few hundred metres before falling asleep at the wheel with the vehicle coming to rest against a curb. All these occurrences have the potential to cause major damage or worse, injury to innocent members of the public. Dumb luck is only going to

Less than great was the idea of some out-of-town lads who thought it would be amusing to let off fireworks on the doorstep of a random residence and then later a park bench downtown. When located, the individual was remorseful for their actions and the disturbance they had caused a visiting family. Regardless of how much people may be under the influence of various substances, it would be pleasing to see people who are about to make a poor decision given timely and sage advice by those around them prior to committing acts of stupidity such as letting off fireworks, driving intoxicated or getting into

Wānaka Backyard Trapping AGM Plus Guest Speaker

If you’ve spotted some trap boxes along the local tracks, they are likely to be part of a large trapping network established by a volunteerled group called Wānaka Backyard Trapping.

The group formed in 2018, initially focused on pest control on private properties, then gradually extending the trapping to public land. The group now runs 11 trap lines containing 412 traps around Wānaka, Albert Town, Hāwea and Luggate. The aim of all this work is to decrease the number of introduced predatory pests in the

region to help increase the number of native birds, lizards, and invertebrates.

On Thursday, 22 June at 7.00pm, the Annual General Meeting for Wānaka Backyard Trapping will be held in the meeting room at the Luggate Memorial Centre. Anyone can attend this meeting to hear about the recent achievements of the group. Sam Purdie from the Southern Lakes Sanctuary will be the guest speaker. Sam is a herpetologist – a scientist who studies reptiles and/ or amphibians. Sam will talk about the geckos and skinks living around Wānaka and how we can all help to protect them.

To celebrate, volunteers are being called on to create reusable bags using repurposed net curtains.

Wastebusters event coordinator Chelsea Holdom said these will be fun, relaxed evenings of connection and creation while making hundreds of bags to give away. “We want to help our community prepare for the ban by providing reusable alternatives to single-use paper and plastic bags,” Chelsea said.

Whether you’re new to sewing or a pro, everyone is welcome. “We’ll supply all the materials and equipment, as well as delicious snacks and drinks. We’ll have stations set up for cutting, sewing, threading or creating pre-cut packs for volunteers to sew at home.”

The bags will be handed out for free at New World Three Parks on 1 July.

Wastebusters is celebrating another single-use plastic ban with two Sip ‘n Sew events this month, ahead of Plastic Free July.

Wānaka Community Workshop Building on a Strong Foundation

The Wānaka Community Workshop Trust is coming up for three years old and is building on momentum as the space evolves and the community around it grows.

The Wo(Men)Shed sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays have completed a large number of projects that are out in the community, and Fabricate (the sewing room) has it’s fabric shredder up and running and is making exciting projects using this interesting resource, as well as hosting learn to sew evening classes. Individuals are realising their making dreams in the evenings and we have

several community groups using the facility on a regular basis.

In the background, enabling all this to happen, we have a core group of funding supporters and sponsors particularly the QLDC, Wānaka ITM, Dunlop Building, Mons Royale, Wānaka Lions, The Go West Trust and Fyfe Karamaena Lawyers.

If you would like to participate or contribute, we’d love to meet you. We are looking for skilled facilitators to run courses and people to help in the community maker sessions. If you need the use of the workshop for your own projects, we’re here for that as well.
