From Blood Groups To Bioactive Paint: A Lifelong Journey

The Wanaka Branch of the Royal Society brings leading thinkers, highly regarded in their eld of knowledge and expertise, to talk about their work. Each year ten eminent national speakers are included in the programme.

On the outside of everything living exists a large number of 3D biological shapes. Cells of the immune system ‘feel’ surfaces to decide if the shape belongs to a friend or foe, while others use it as a form of communication - kind of like 3D ‘braille’.

Professor Stephen Henry’s early studies were of molecules called glycolipids (which can hop into

cells and label them) before he switched to creating synthetic analogues. The work evolved into ‘Kode technology’ when he created a 3D bioactive paint that allows the rapid modi cation of virtually any biological or non-biological surface and can be used to create novel diagnostic and therapeutic products.

For his work, Steve won NZ’s Innovator Award. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of NZ and has received its Scott Medal and Pickering Medal.
