AN AWE FILLED HOLIDAY

Term’s nearly over, the holidays are just around the corner, and At the World’s Edge Music Festival is about to begin!

From October 5 to 13, Wānaka, Queenstown, and Bannockburn will host some of the most talented musicians from Aotearoa and across the globe. In a rousing celebration of folk music and its influence on classical music, festival-goers will embark on a global musical journey through seven festival programmes.

Joining leading NZ violinists and AWE Festival Directors, Justine Cormack and Benjamin Baker, is Cromwell-born, UK-based violist, Bryony Gibson-Cornish, who will perform in Central Otago for the first time in a decade. Christchurch Symphony’s Principal Viola, Serenity Thurlow, makes her debut on the AWE stage.

These New Zealand chamber music stars will be joined by their international peers, including UK clarinettist Julian Bliss, one of the world’s finest. US violinist Alexi Kenney, renowned Hungarian pianist Daniel Lebhardt, and rising American cellist Sterling Elliott all make their Aotearoa débuts at AWE.

Soprano Deborah Wai Kapohe and Australian baritone, Morgan Pearse, will bring Antipodean flair to folk songs from around the world as part of the free AWE+ series. “Folk music’s about music for the people,” says Morgan. “Hopefully this theme will convince people who wouldn’t normally come to a chamber music festival that there’s something here that has a touchstone to their own cultural heritage.”

At the World’s Edge Festival runs from 5 - 13 Oct, 2024. Visit www.worldsedgefestival.com for tickets and full AWE/AWE+ programmes.

FUNDRAISING BALL EXCEEDS TARGET FOR KĀHU YOUTH

The Kāhu Youth team and volunteer ball committee members, wish to offer their sincere thanks to all those who took part in the recent Forsyth Barr Winter Wonderland Ball in Association with Kāhu Youth. The glamorous event achieved a staggering figure of $61,000.00 which will be used to fund the fit out of the new Kāhu Youth centre at Paetara Aspiring Central.

Said Kāhu Youth Operations Director Anna Sutherland “It has been so heart-warming to see the support across the Wānaka community. In addition to being a wonderful evening and celebration of our young people, the event helped to raise both the profile of the organisation and the much-

needed funds for our centre fit out. I would like to thank the organisers, partners, volunteers, attendees and generous auction bidders for their incredible support”.

The sold-out event, held at the Lake Wānaka Centre, marked the charity’s 21 st year and celebrated the impactful work it leads throughout the Wānaka community focused on rangatahi / young people aged 11-24. The event was proudly supported by naming rights partner Forsyth Barr, alongside a long list of generous businesses, community groups and individuals.

The auction, led voluntarily and expertly by Brendan Quill of Colliers Queenstown, received great support on the night, including a stunning artwork

‘Takuta #6’ by renowned New Zealand artist Darryn George, a portrait sitting by Stephen Martyn Welch and ‘Heading up the Dingle’ by Anna Reid. There were also several unique silent auction experiences on offer, including lawn mowing services by Wānaka Olympian Nico Porteous, alongside a range of items generously donated by local businesses.

The new Wanaka Youth Centre will feature a kitchen, art space, music room, study spaces and a range of fun activities including a pool table and air hockey table, music and DJ gear, supervised gaming stations, and outdoor chill spaces. The facility is currently under construction and due to re-open in the next couple of weeks.
