I could be wrong but since our last Crimeline I don’t think we have had anyone be caught for drink driving and this is not from a lack of us trying. If that is the case, great work everyone. Maybe, just maybe the message is getting out there not to do it. We have however been kept busy with plenty of driving complaints especially through the Crown Range and issuing plenty of tickets for RIDS. Like many organisations we love a good acronym. Every time an officer is out driving, we are looking to prevent harm on our roads for drivers not using their restraints or seatbelts. Impaired drivers, distracted drivers and speed. We also want to ensure your vehicle is up to warrant of fitness standard and it is registered to be on our roads. If I had a dollar for every time I was told their WOF is booked in for next week, I would be in Paris watching the Rugby World Cup. Even if you are not the owner of the vehicle, if you are driving, it is your responsibility to make sure these are squared away. We had two cars in separate incidents crash on the top of the hill heading out to Hāwea. Both occasions there was wet roads and the drivers failed to alter their speed to suit the conditions. It made it an easy job for the tow truck. Two birds with one stone as they say. We continue to have thefts reported from local stores. Many stores have good CCTV cameras operating which we use to identify the suspect/s. Please ensure you pay for your goods, or you could be explaining yourself to the judge. Over the Labour Weekend we saw the normal influx of youths in town trying their luck with fake ID’s. This is an offence by misuse of a document. It was also disappointing to see some parents not bothered about their son or daughter getting caught by security or Police. In conjunction with our partner agencies, Health and Council, we conducted a controlled purchase operation in Wanaka, which tests the systems, bottle stores and bars have in place to ensure they do not supply youth with alcohol. For those that passed well done, you're a vital cog in ensuring our community is a safe place. Unfortunately, four businesses failed and we now look to work with them to ensure it doesn't happen again. This failure can have an impact on their ability to continue to have an alcohol licence. As we work towards the summer break and the New Years Eve operations, it is important that everyone plays their part. To those business that played their part and are regularly checking identification, what you're doing counts and has an impact in many ways, so keep up the good work. We have had a lot of property handed in from the long weekend. If you have lost glasses, phones, wallets, IDs and bank cards, please come and see us at the station to see if your property is here. Northlake Skate Jam Kahu Youth Trust is proud to present this year’s Northlake Skate Jam on Saturday, 18 November. Come and get involved in this incredibly fun community event with individuals of all ages getting together and celebrating all things skateboarding. This is a family friendly event with a multievent skateboarding competition, featuring skaters from all over the South Island. Competition: Game of Skate, Open Trick Comp/ U12, U16, Girls, Open. Cash prizes for Open and Girls categories, and sweet prize packs. Kahu Youth will be putting on a BBQ to keep the tanks full! This year the funds raised from the koha registrations will go towards Kahu Youth’s new youth centre.

A Virus That Heals!

Did you know that bacteria are attacked by their own viruses? Discovered over a century ago, these are called bacteriophages (‘bacterium eaters’) or simply phages. In a time before antibiotics, the idea took hold that phages might be used to combat bacterial disease. Research didn’t progress far, not least because of the discovery of penicillin. But that wasn’t the end of the story. Bacteria have been evolving resistance to antibiotics, and each year more than a million people die from drug resistant disease. So now, once again, phage therapy is seen as a potentially powerful tool to combat
human disease. Bacteria also impose heavy costs in species important for food production. Professor Peter Fineran (Otago University) is a global leader in both research areas. Peter will present the next lecture in the series organised by the Wānaka Branch of the Royal Society of New Zealand. WAI Wanaka Calls for Local Boat Owners’ Support WAI Wānaka calls for local boat owners’ support in microplastics sampling for ongoing research project. WAI Wānaka, a local community organisation behind ‘A Teeny Tiny Truth’ – an ongoing research project investigating microplastics in Lake Wānaka alongside PhD Student Veronica Rotman (University of Auckland / University of Otago), has put a call out for volunteer boat owners to assist in their upcoming round of microplastics sampling. Sampling is scheduled to take place between the dates of 30 October – 3 November, requiring volunteer boat owners to transport Veronica and WAI Volunteers to 10 different sampling locations on the lake. “Sampling takes between 5-8 hours per day, we’re looking for boat owners/drivers willing to commit to either one full day, or the entire 3-4 days of sampling” says Jaylene (WAI Wānaka).
Participating in this research project offers a unique opportunity for individuals of our community to actively contribute to the monitoring and safeguarding of Lake Wānaka, while enjoying a fun and purposeful boating experience. STANDARDISING RECYCLING Kerbside Recycling Update The Ministry for the Environment is making it easier for people to recycle right no matter where you are in Aotearoa New Zealand by standardising kerbside recycling across the country. Their aim is to reduce confusion and contamination so more materials can be recycled and to help businesses choose more easily recyclable packaging for their products. The good news is, in the Queenstown Lakes District, we’re already accepting most of the items on the standardised list of recyclables. There’s just one small change; from 1 February you can put more plastics marked 1 in your yellow mixed recycling, including meat trays, punnets and coloured bottles (like L&P). Pizza boxes free from grease and food can also go in your yellow bin. From 1 February 2024, here’s what you can recycle in your yellow mixed recycling bin: • Clean plastic bottles, trays and containers marked 1 , 2 and 5 • Clean aluminium and steel cans • Clean paper and cardboard Keep using your red rubbish bin for soft plastics, coffee cups, drink cartons, lids, plastics or foil lined paper and cardboard.

There is no change to glass recycling. Only clean glass bottles and jars used for food and drink go in your blue glass recycling bin. All other glass, including drinking glasses, go in your red rubbish bin. Ceramics go in the rubbish too.
