QUARTET PERFORMS JAZZ STANDARDS

Hailed as “bold and stylistically varied” (The Modernist, PBS FM), Ben Wilcock’s latest album 'The River Tethys' includes a harmonious mix of contemporary takes on jazz standards and original melodies.

Audiences can expect to hear impressive improvisations and refreshing arrangements of classics such as 1930s show tune 'Star Eyes' and Dizzy Gillespie’s 'Groovin’ High'.

Some of Aotearoa’s best known and most impressive jazz musicians bring acoustic music, which ebbs and flows, with up-tempo sections and melodic ballads.

Accomplished pianist Ben Wilcock is joined by the talented Tristan Carter on violin, Dan Yeabsley on double bass, and award-winning drummer John Rae.

When these renowned Wellington musicians come together, they deliver the most dynamic voice and melodic clarity, with jewel like compositions, whilst staying true to their jazz roots.

Environmental DNA for Enhancing Conservation and Biosecurity in Aotearoa - With Dr Shaun Wilkinson

High-throughput DNA sequencing technologies make it possible to survey entire biological communities with as little as a single cup of water.

The commercialisation of environmental DNA (eDNA) has vastly improved the accessibility and accuracy of this technology. In Aotearoa New Zealand, eDNA monitoring is being used by multiple organisations from community science groups to central government agencies, with applications spanning biosecurity, threatened species monitoring, biodiversity assessments and ecological health evaluation.

As its popularity increases, we are seeing more examples of eDNA having positive, tangible outcomes for conservation and biosecurity.

In his talk, Shaun will give an overview of the issues being tackled by eDNA in Aotearoa and consider where to next for this exciting technology.

Dr. Shaun Wilkinson is the founder and CEO of Wilderlab, a multi-award-winning Wellington start-up specialising in eDNA sequencing and analytics.

As a former Rutherford Foundation Postdoctoral Research Fellow (University of Wellington) and current Adjunct Associate Professor at Curtin University, Shaun’s research focuses on developing robust machine learning models, statistical software and eDNA eld collection methods for optimising eDNA performance across a range of environment types.

The Wanaka Info Guide has been informing visitors for 32 years, it is a premium magazine distributed annually and free of charge to the guest rooms and receptions of local accommodation providers along with other reception areas of service providers in our area. It is also online at www.wanakainfoguide.co.nz This is the ‘go to guide’ of where to go, what to do, where to dine and shop when visiting our beautiful region.
