Wao Summit is back this year, celebrating six years of enabling climate action.

The six day festival of kōrero, workshops, films and tours is once again lining up a program that will enable our community to transition towards a regenerative future. Not just this community, either; the summit sends its ripples across the country. To be held from the 24 -29 October across Wānaka, Queenstown and Glenorchy. The week will also feature online a large selection of kōrero, workshops and films available to watch with an online ticket available for those outside the region.

“We’ll have kōrero led by those affected by our recent national weather events, as well as discussions on how to have a game plan ready for when we need it,” says

Monique Kelly, Wao General Manager. Other topics will include food resilience, changing demographics due to climate migration, balancing our energy requirements with the urgent need to reduce emissions, and what a wellbeing economy might look like. Other key themes include climate change, biodiversity and circular economy with workshops for those in the building industry, tourism and for the general public on how to live lightly. There will also be some pecha kucha-style Tiny Talks from local circular economy heroes and a raft of other meaty topics. As Kelly says, “What we face is an enormous task, but we all have our unique part to play.”

Here are this week’s doings from our community.

You may have seen a small boat that had run a shore in front of Edgewater early last week. The crew aboard picked one of the most wintery days so far this year in Wanaka to make their annual BBQ trip to Ruby Island. Upon setting off for home, they ran aground, getting stuck on a sand bar (maybe) and all aboard were unable to push or pull the vessel free. This caused Police and partner agency – the Harbour Master to assist.

Police have been busy out patrolling and keeping our roads safe.

Unfortunately Wanaka, the message is still not sinking in. Seatbelts are designed to save your life. They are not an ornament designed to hang and not be used. Cellphones - c’mon Wanaka! Put it down and concentrate. These are a distraction. It’s all too common to see drivers driving along holding their cellphone up in front of their eyes, or above the steering wheel and not concentrating. Speed! Wanaka is not a racetrack. Take it easy team! Slow it down and read the signs that tell you what the speed limit is. It is okay, you’ll make it to where you need to get to.

It wouldn’t be a Crimeline if we didn’t talk about drinking and driving. At least six drivers were processed for excess breath or blood alcohol over the past week. One driver was observed by Police rolling through a stop sign and when eye contact was made, the driver held up a wine glass and cheers'ed the Police Officer. They are now off to court.

Alcohol fueled behaviour is on the increase in Wanaka, particularly on a Friday or Saturday night. A male was arrested for headbutting another patron inside a bar. An altercation inside the Night 'n' Day caused damage to food and drink items as well as display items. If you can’t handle your alcohol, then don’t drink. One simple mistake can cost you your job, or something as precious as a firearms licence.

Police receive numerous traffic complaints daily about motorists not complying to the road rules. Please be a prudent road user and get from A to B as safe as possible. High calls for service are Cardrona Valley Road, Crown Range, Wanaka – Luggate Highway, and Hawea – Albert Town Road. Yes, a lot of these traffic complaints are about our friends who are visiting our outstanding habitat, but quite a few relate to those who reside within. Fireworks were set off inside MAC school grounds in the wee hours. A group were witnessed running off and Police inquiries are continuing. The annual Hawea Polar Plunge was held. Great to see all those keen plungers. Police attended to support those involved. However, from all reports it was a bit cold for the attending Police Officer to get his kit off and partake. There was overwhelming support for him from all present, but maybe next year.

Wanaka Police have been busy identifying and apprehending several shoplifters over the past week. These bandits will now be off to Court and held accountable for their actions. As a consequence, these outlaws will no longer be able to shop or visit the location they offended at.

Meaningful Conversations - Community Kai

Wanaka Swim Club warmly invites local children to our Have-A-Go event on 8 Sept at the QLDC Wanaka Recreation Centre. This will be run alongside our club night that is held once per term where WSC members race in various events.

It is racing but the focus is for lots of fun, swimmers must be able to swim 25m without support on any style. Events available include 25m free choice, 25m kickboard and relay.

What is the Wanaka Info Guide?

The Wanaka Info Guide has been informing visitors for 32 years, it is a premium magazine distributed annually and free of charge to the guest rooms and receptions of local accommodation providers along with other reception areas of service providers in our area. It is also online at www.wanakainfoguide.co.nz This is the ‘go to guide’ of where to go, what to do, where to dine and shop when visiting our beautiful region. Include your business so visitors know who you are, what you offer and where to find you.

Remember what it is like to arrive at your destination, pour a drink or make a cup of tea and look through a room compendium to see what is available and what is happening? Now that our region is humming with visitors again, it is a great time to be involved in this comprehensive Wanaka Info Guide.

The Wanaka Info Guides will appear in the rooms before Christmas and are replenished throughout the year. We only feature Wanaka and surrounding businesses to encourage our visitors to stay and explore. The advertising rates are for a full year of advertising. The prices are less than advertising a full page or double page in local advertising publications which circulate for 1 week. This year we have had to print extra Wanaka Info Guides as their popularity has grown so much, 1600 were printed and we are almost out already. We will be printing 2000 for our next issue to keep up with growth.
