COLD KIDS FUNDRAISING INITIATIVE

The objective of the ‘Cold Kids’ campaign is to encourage donations to fund heating costs for families struggling to keep their homes warm.

This is particularly appropriate now that winter has arrived and we have to cope with plummeting temperatures, frosts and the inversion layer. Wanaka is an extremely expensive place to live, and some families simply find the extra heating costs unaffordable. There most definitely is poverty in Wanaka. Many tenanted properties are very poorly insulated and heated. Children are suffering from the detrimental effects of cold homes. They become more prone to sickness and sleep deprivation, which affect their performance at school. Murray Walker, who is leading the Cold Kids campaign, knew of a neighbourhood family suffering from the cold. Having had a similar personal experience as a

child, he assisted the family to have a warmer home. Donations will subsidise home heating costs and may help support a child’s warmth, health and comfort. It is hoped your contribution will help reduce pressure and stress on families and create a positive community spirit. Anyone can assist, especially Superannuants, who are now receiving the Winter Energy Payment. Many Superannuants feel that subsidy would be more useful to those on the poverty line. Coeliac Awareness Week - Gluten Free Pasta Making

Wanaka Coeliac Kids Club is now in its third year. The goals of the Club are to support children and their whanau living with Coeliac Disease.

What is Coeliac Disease? It is estimated that 65,000 Kiwis have Coeliac Disease and approximately 80% of these people are unaware they have the condition. Coeliac Disease is a lifelong auto-immune disorder. It damages the intestinal lining and thus the ability to absorb nutrients. It can cause crippling symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhoea, constipation, nausea, vomiting and joint pain. Coeliac disease can be effectively treated with a strict, lifelong gluten-free diet.

Wanaka Matariki Celebration 2023 - Save the Date!

The Queenstown Lakes Destination Management Organisation (DMO) will work collaboratively with the district’s regional tourism organisations (Destination Queenstown and Lake Wānaka Tourism), Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) and other relevant third parties to support the implementation of initiatives from Travel toaThrivingFuture- the destination management plan for the Queenstown Lakes. The DMO will have a lead role in the creation, management, and implementation of the destination management plan, with the goal of a future focused, regenerative visitor economy across the Queenstown and Wānaka region. It will bring to life initiatives which support the visitor economy to add value across social, cultural, environmental, and economic measures. The DMO creates the environment to support the desire from our communities and business to transition to a regenerative tourism model. As a new entity, the DMO is seeking to appoint a Board of Directors which will comprise of no more than seven Directors, one of which will be appointed as the Chair at the first meeting of the Board.
