ROTARY CLUB BOOK SALE STARTS MONDAY

Thousands of books will be on sale. The much anticipated annual Rotary Club of Wānaka Book Sale, which will feature thousands of second hand books, is on next week for three days (from Monday 3 July to Wednesday, 5 July).

The book sale has traditionally attracted hundreds of people to the Lake Wānaka Centre in search of a great read at a bargain price.

Rotary Club of Wānaka incoming president John Milburn said the public response to donating books over the past few weeks has been wonderful.

“We have had thousands of books dropped off at Mitre 10 MEGA,” John said. “The Rotary team are

busy sorting them and preparing for the sale.” The books have been categorised to make browsing easy and the majority of books are priced at $2.

Some newer books and special interest books are a little more expensive.

“It’s a big job to categorise and price but well worth it when we see the response and the funds we can raise for the community,” John said.

All funds raised will go to help the Rotary Club of Wānaka support worthwhile projects and causes in the community.

The book sale will take place over three days at the Lake Wānaka Centre from 3-5 July. Opening hours are 10.00am-4.30pm each day.

A Club for All Rowers On the most beautiful training lake in the world

Seventeen years after forming, the Wānaka Rowing Club continues to focus on providing facilities and community for everyone who loves to row. And with membership increasing, we are on the lookout for experienced former rowers keen to re-engage with the sport.

The Club aims to nurture all who love to row and rmly believe rowing is a sport that can be enjoyed through your life and recreational journey. With a membership including masters, novices, social lovers of rowing, competitive crews and everyone in between - at our Club there’s a place for all.

It’s not all early mornings and cold ngers - as our community is as big a focus as our conditioning. Our very

active masters group is well known for their wonderful team spirit and their great social trips, including an amazing recent outing on Piopiotahi/Milford Sound. While our school age squad rows throughout the Summer with fun and competitive weekend regattas held primarily in Twizel.

Based out of the Wānaka Watersports Facility, the Wānaka Rowing Club is well resourced for both lake and landbased training. Right now we are on the lookout for extra support for our awesome volunteer coaching team. If you think coaching or assisting with training is the next step in your rowing journey, then we’d love to talk to you! There’s also volunteer opportunities in admin and planning.

Freshwater Ecosystems Under Threat Conservation In a Warming Aotearoa

Professor Angus McIntosh, University of Canterbury

In his talk, Angus will traverse the range of issues associated with climate change that confront our freshwater ecosystems. He’ll talk about the challenges as well as some solutions. This will touch on native sh having to deal with drought and introduced trout, mud sh negotiating tornados, high alpine tarns receiving frogs, and squashed braided rivers. After a PhD at the University of Otago and a Fulbright fellowship at Cornell

University, Angus joined the University of Canterbury where he is now a Professor of Freshwater Ecology. He is a member of the Ako Aotearoa Academy of Tertiary Teaching Excellence and part of the Freshwater Ecology Research Group at UC. His research has combined investigation of food webs with spatial analysis to reveal how environmental change a ects freshwater systems. This has involved work on low ows, habitat loss, invaders and riparian management.

He has considered, for example, kōkōpu and other native sh, whio, alpine tarns, braided rivers and lowland springs. Recently this work has focused more on restoration. He’s recently started working more on the conservation of braided river ecosystems and trying to solve problems involving interactions between trout and native sh. Preston Pest Control will be laying Pindone carrot bait for rabbit control from 28 June. This will be on private property including the QEII covenanted area used by the public, adjacent to the Waterfall Creek walking track. Signage will be erected on all gates and stiles when bait has been laid.

THE PUBLIC SHOULD NOTE THE FOLLOWING POINTS.

• Pindone bait and carcasses represent a lower risk to dogs but please keep your dog under control in this area and do not allow it to scavenge on carcasses or eat baits.

• Do not handle or remove any baits or carcasses.

• Do supervise children in this area.

• Consider exercising your dog in another area if you are at all concerned.
