WANAKA SKI & SNOWSPORTS CLUB PLANNING A FULL FAMILY FUN 2020 SEASON FOLLOWING LOCKDOWN. Contributed by: Bonny Teat Anticipation mounts for Wanaka Ski and Snowsports Club members and supporters with snow falling on the mountains and level 1 now here. As Cardrona turns 40, 2020 may bring less crowded slopes. Incentive for locals to get out their gear and get back on the snow! WSSC will hold its “Covid postponed“ AGM on Sunday 14th June 4.00pm at Snow Sports NZ office, 82 Anderson Road. Members, intending members and snowsports supporters are welcome. A social hour will follow the meeting. Social fun on and off snow, is something the Club strives to promote. Regular Friday night drinks, social events/trips for members and opportunities for adults to ski/board with groups in regular skill improvement sessions. Free ‘Race Your Mates’ family events at both TC and Cardrona during the school holidays are a chance for families and friends to challenge each other in a simple giant slalom format. 49 Year 2 - Year 8 2020 Grassroots awards children will each receive $300 towards the cost of their on snow training, which will be paid directly to their chosen mountain program. A pre-season family BBQ and fun activities
afternoon is a chance to meet new members. Over $60,000 has been distributed through WSSC’s Grassroots program since 2013. The Clubs athletes performances in Freeski/Board, Freeride and Alpine events exceeded expectations during the Northern Hemisphere season, with many athletes across the ages achieving podium finishes and further projecting Wanaka into the snow sports world. In a huge achievement for a non traditional sport, WSSC Freeride World Tour athlete Craig Murray received ASB Otago Sportsman of the Year last week. Currently Club members participate in events across our region from the age of 4 - 76. Participation is the key for Club members. Dan will touch on avalanche and weather forecasting resources, and what conditions tend to be typical in different ski areas. If you’re keen to beat the crowds and ski further afield, this is a great opportunity to start planning your winter adventures.
In anticipation of the winter season, Aspiring Guides is once again offering FREE evening info sessions to help locals make the most of our Wanaka backcountry. For the past two years, the popular Splitboarding 101 session has filled to capacity, with Aspiring Guide/SnowSportsNZ coach Tom Willmott delivering an introductory
presentation of gear, basic technique and advice to snowboarders keen to get into the backcountry and tour efficiently. This full session allows the chance to check out splitboards and gear on site, as well as pick the brain of an expert guide, before investing in your first splitboard. Get tips on making quick transitions between uphill and downhill travel, and suggestions for progressing your skills and backcountry knowledge.

On Thursday an attempted fraud was made on a local person’s bank account. Beware of allowing anyone to view your internet or banking details. Thankfully an interception from the bank stopped the attempted fraud. Police are also investigating theft from a local store. The offender may wish to hand herself into Senior Constable McLean before her image is circulated. It may save embarrassment. On Friday evening Police apprehended another person who was driving with excess breath alcohol, this time the level will require a court appearance with probable loss of licence. The early hours of Sunday morning saw another person apprehended for driving with excess breath alcohol. Just a reminder to stick to the speed restrictions through the many roadworks around town, let us keep the road workers safe as they improve the road network for our community. There are new speed zones around the area, so drive to the speed on the signs, they have been there a while now, so get the foot off the accelerator. We are probably entering one of the greatest periods of change for our economy that will have an impact on our town and test the resilience of our community. As has been widely said, be kind to one another, show understanding, and as we move into level 1 keep the behaviour as good as it has been in the other 3 levels. Stay Safe.
