Lights, Camera, Action! Wanaka’s very own talent show, Stars in Your Eyes, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. Run over three nights in September, audiences will get the chance to watch locals dress up and perform hits from their favourite stars. Past performers include ‘Beyoncé’, ‘The Backstreet Boys’ and ‘Shirley Bassey.’ The success of Stars in Your Eyes over the years has resulted in the Wanaka Musicians Society Inc. donating approximately $250,000 back to the community. Each year, schools and other institutions are invited to submit a ‘wish list’ for their musical needs which the society endeavours to satisfy, subject to available funds. In addition to this, the society funds a $2,000 Jamie Robertson Scholarship to a Mount Aspiring College pupil. As a consequence of last year’s show, over $11,000

was distributed to local schools and early childhood centres for the continuing development of musical education and experience for the children of our community.

One of the reasons behind the show’s continued success is due to its non-competitive nature, with everyone working to the same goal—another year of quality performances and entertainment. The society would like to extend their thanks to audiences and supporters, without whom there would be no show or funds to disburse. This year’s show promises to be entertainment for all ages, with some big name stars taking to the stage. Then come along to the Auditorium at the Lake Wanaka Centre this Friday 11 August from 5.30 - 6.30pm. Organised by Laurel Teirney, the intent of the event is to raise awareness of Lake Wanaka. Laurel would like the community to have input into the future of the Lake. “Come along to hear about a proven grass roots community/agency approach that could work for our lake. Enjoy a chat with a complimentary glass of bubbles, beer or something nonalcoholic whilst discussing issues surrounding the lake and share stories of your most magic moments on our lake and bring with you your hopes of how you would like to see Lake Wanaka in 10 - 20 years,” said Laurel of the event. Laurel wants to involve the community in creating a management plan for Lake Wanaka. Other things that will be discussed at the meeting are the formation of a working group, identification of the issues, what we already know, and negotiating solutions moving forward. Laurel has requested you bring with you a brief

description of, “What you hope our lake will be like in 10-20 years” and post it in the box provided. There will also be an opportunity to fill in your ‘hopes’ at the Happy Hour. It has been a fairly busy past week for the Wanaka Police with a mixed bag of incidents. Here are a few of the jobs we have dealt with: At the start of the week a duffel bag containing personal effects was removed from a vehicle that was parked at the rear of a house on Upton Street. It appears this took place overnight. A local female was arrested for wilful trespass at a local bar after being refused entry due to her intoxication level and choosing to climb a fence to gain entry anyway. Police attended a crash on the Red Bridge at Luggate. The vehicle was heading across the bridge towards Hawea. Due to the presence of ice the vehicle lost control and spun becoming wedged between the two sides of the bridge. The bridge sustained substantial damage. Another crash happened just south of the Cardrona township when a vehicle got caught up in grit and the back end of the vehicle slid out. The driver over corrected and the vehicle ended up in the river. Three drink drivers were stopped and processed for excess breath alcohol. I am yet to write a Crimeline for the week that doesn’t make mention of a drink driver being caught. Sometime on Friday night a special individual decided to throw a beer bottle through the front window of the Pharmacy, and the manager of the Lakeside Apartments reported some buffoon had thrown two pool side loungers onto the cover of the outside pool, damaging it. Two males were arrested in separate incidents on the weekend for disorderly behaviour and one for resisting police. Both involved a high level of intoxication and after a spell in the cells they were in a much better state. Keep warm and enjoy the rest of the week.
