The young and young-at-heart are invited to spend some quality time together at Wanaka Recreation Centre for another grandparents and grandkids activity morning on 24 January 2018. The first session held in October last year was a huge success with more than 50 locals enjoying intergenerational fun with sports and games including table tennis, badminton and walking netball. Penny Batchelor, QLDC team leader at Wanaka Recreation Centre, said it was back again by popular demand. “Everyone had such a good time and we’ve had several requests for another session. All the games are low-impact to allow everyone to get involved, no matter what your ability or energy levels!” she said.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS Passion goes a long way... Thirty years ago one man had a passion for WWII aircraft. Not his only passion by any means but one that gave him much pleasure. That man was Sir Tim Wallis. A visionary, a man prepared to take risks, someone who wanted to give back to the community... Sir Tim held his first Warbirds Over Wanaka Airshow in 1988. Thinking he would showcase some of his aircraft to friends, he organised, with brother George Wallis and Gavin Johnston, a weekend where he could display his WWII aircraft collection. Not just friends turned up but 14,000 people gathered at Wanaka Airport. This Easter, we celebrate 30 years of Warbirds Over Wanaka and the legacy left by Sir Tim. He and brother George will be there, feted for their hard work, tenacity and foresight. Over the years, the Alpine Fighter’s collection of aircraft (Spitfires, Hawker Hurricane, Mustang to name a few) have been sold, but the passion lives on.

A number of stalwarts who were there at the beginning are still assisting to run the Airshow today. Many of the community groups that assisted at the beginning have moved on but some are still working to raise funds at the Airshow and new groups have joined them over the years. At this Airshow, over 50,000 people are expected, with the event having changed from a small country event to an international airshow of repute. One of the four best

Warbird Airshows in the world, it is unique, not just for the spectacular scenery or the close up nature of the aircraft, but the passion of the aircraft owners and pilots who return, airshow after airshow, to display their special aircraft at Wanaka. New Zealand is blessed with a loyal and dedicated contingent of owners who pour untold resources into their aircraft to ensure the public can see these workhorses that ensured we have our freedom today.

Town is still busy after the New Year mayhem. So much has happened over the last two weeks, so my summary will include post Christmas Day onwards. A real mixture of happenings, from tragedy to the good stuff. After Santa left via the front door, taking his glass of milk and slice of Christmas cake with him, Police in Wanaka were quite busy, most of the time, dealing with the many people in Wanaka. Some were from out of town who brought their bad attitudes with them. The New Year liquor ban again worked very well. Most people were issued a warning because they did what was required of them. Those that didn’t were $250 poorer. R&A went particularly well as did the events at Lake Hawea - the value of having good staff and quality security. Parking remains a problem close to town, and it was poor that many chose to destroy the grass areas even when choosing to park beside the ‘no parking on the grass’ signs. The walk into the CBD generally compensates spending the day eating and drinking. Police attended a single-vehicle crash on the Crown Range on the 25th December. On the 26th, a burglary at a Beech St address was reported. A couple of bikes were reported stolen over the New Year period. On the 27th, a 33yr old tramper was reported missing in the Siberia Hut area but was located safe and well. On the 28th a 47yr old man fell off the NW Ridge of Mt Aspiring and suffered a EURNHQ OHJ +H ZDV Ă€RZQ WR 'XQHGLQ +RVSLWDO On New Year’s Eve a male reported being assaulted in Ardmore St by a stranger near the I-site. Also that day a four-vehicle crash was attended at the Brownston St/Dungarvon St intersection. Fortunately there were no injuries in the crash. On New Year’s Day a forbidden driver had his vehicle impounded and another male had his 4WD vehicle ‘green stickered’ due to four bald tyres. On the 5th January, a burglary was reported at a Bernard Road address. Another burglary was also reported to a Ragan Lane address. Police will continue to focus on speed and driving manner on local roads through the holiday period. The speed tolerance remains at 104km/hr on the open road. Cell phone use by drivers and seatbelt use by vehicle occupants will continue to be a focus. Up to 50 incidents per day are being attended through the district as Police strive to reduce harm on our roads. Thanks to all those motorists who have reported bad drivers on *555 and 111.
