New Year, new look for the Messenger

The Upper Clutha Messenger was created by Shirley and David Jaquiery in 1978, starting off as a single page foolscap publication born out of necessity and a genuine need to communicate in the days before regular newspaper delivery, computers and email. Wanaka was a town of around 700 people when the Messenger started - fast forward to 2017 and the Messenger has continued to grow and evolve, much like the town! In the early days The Messenger was a single page community diary produced on a Gestetner duplicator and was distributed by Colin and Pat Johnson who also delivered the milk and the ODT. The Messenger was taken over by the Miller family in 2004. Up until 2007, the Messenger was hand collated by a team of 5 people, who would painstakingly stack each page, staple and hand roll every copy on Tuesday evening. Until September 2015 the

Messenger was printed each week by Print It, however due to increased volume and popularity the Messenger is now printed by offset printer ODT Print in Alexandra, with over 5000 copies distributed weekly. Come into Print It on a Tuesday afternoon and you will see staff lined up diligently proofing every page before it goes to print. We are often asked “What is the Messenger?” Not quite a newspaper and more than a bulletin, the Messenger is a unique publication made up primarily of advertising, with a strong community focus. Whether you’re looking to buy or sell a second hand sofa, or want to see what is on at the cinema, or if you need the number of a good plumber – then the Messenger is the best place to look. You’re bound to find what you’re looking for and more! We are regularly asked why the Messenger is not classified. The random format works exceptionally well for advertisers because their message gets to everyone, and for readers it’s a bit like the old lucky dip, reading the Messenger is all about the thrill of the search. The front page story has always been reserved for worthy community based events and organisations, and we recently

introduced another community section ‘My Community News’, focussing on events of the future, and a weekly business advertorial so that people can get to know more about businesses in Wanaka and the stories of the people behind them. We are proud that the Messenger has never missed a scheduled publication date, even when the Helwick Street office was flooded by over half a metre of Lake Wanaka. While the Messenger makes no claim to be a newspaper, people from everywhere who have an interest in Wanaka see it as essential reading to ‘know what’s going on’. We continue to deliver the publication for free to mailboxes in the Wanaka region. After 38 years, the Messenger is getting a fresh, new look. News from GOAL : 1. PLANTINGS. At beginning of October 25 of us planted over 100. SIGNAGE. A new sign was erected describing the bird life in the Lagoon. WATER QUALITY REPORT. QLDC commissioned a detailed water analysis of the Lagoon and the report is now available on QLDC's website. LAGOON PATH. A contractor started to 'formalise' the path through the Lagoon reserve to make it easier to walk on and mothers to push prams. AMENITIES. A seat is to be installed near the new bird life sign. DRAINAGE. The drain under Alison Ave has been cleared and more work is planned to 'clean up' the south end of the Lagoon to creat more water area for birds. 2017 AND INTO THE FUTURE ? This week we attended 5 vehicle crashes. The most serious being the fatal on the Crown Range Road on Friday. This involved a head on crash between a motorcycle and a 4WD. As in all fatal crashes they are not the most pleasant things to come upon while motoring. We have to acknowledge the SURPSW ÂżUVW DLG JLYHQ WR WKH ULGHU E\ WKRVH PRWRULVWV ÂżUVW RQ the scene. It was just unfortunate they were unable to save his life. One other of the crashes involved injury. This occurred on Friday night on Domain Road where a vehicle lost control on a gravel surface, leaving the road and rolling over. One occupant sustained a cut to her head and received medical treatment. Others in the vehicle sustained bumps and bruises. This is a good opportunity to remind everyone that loose gravel can be as dangerous as ice and motorists need to drive to the conditions. There was also a very lucky escape for two motorists travelling on SH6. One driver took his eyes off the road to pick up a drink bottle and then crossed the centre line towards an oncoming vehicle. Fortunately the driver in the correct lane took evasive action and avoided a head on crash. The vehicles only clipped wing mirrors. The Holiday Road Policing operation continues to the end of January. Our focus is on alcohol, restraints and speed. Please remember the speed tolerance is 4 kmph. There has been a wee bit of disorder around town. In Mt Iron two houses have been egged, one on two occasions. This may seem like a silly prank but these actions can cause damage to paint work and can cause alarm to the occupants. There were also two instances in local bars where intoxicated patrons have either refused to leave or have tried to gain entry after being refused. Have a safe week.
