For the 8th year running, Kahu Youth will be ‘Takin’ over Amigos’ once again!

For four nights – Tuesday the 24th, Thursday the 26th and Tuesday the 31st of May, plus Thursday the 2nd of June – Kahu Youth’s amazing young people will be taking over the running of one of Wanaka’s most iconic restaurants – Amigos.

This wonderful initiative began small some 8 years ago and has grown to the four night event it is now. Involving over 20 young people who clean and set up the restaurant, take

Bruce, Paul, Kathee, Susan and families wish to express their sincere thanks to all those kind friends who supported us in so many ways following the loss of a much loved wife, mother, mother in law and Nana. The many visits, phone calls, flowers, baking, food, letters and cards were greatly appreciated.

Thank you to the Wanaka Bowling Club who prepared and served afternoon tea and assisted in other ways, and also the ladies who arranged the beautiful flowers, many from Karolyn’s garden.

Thanks to the many people who attended Karolyn’s funeral and also a sincere thanks to St John’s Wanaka, Wanaka Fire Brigade and to Dr Andrew McLeod and the medical staff at Wanaka Medical Centre.

During the week local Police dealt with quite a few incidents leading up to and including the weekend’s activities. Here is a snap shot of some of these: The Green Toad rental shop had a Rocky Mountain hard tail bike stolen. This bike is a 2015 model, black with blue writing and a Green Toad sticker, so keep an eye out.

Police assisted a man with mental health issues this week.

Members of his community and family noticed a change in his behaviour and contacted the mental health team. He then received the help required so he could carry on as normal. I see this as a positive move by them and a great example of people looking out for each other.

Early on Saturday evening two vehicles collided on Rob Roy Lane. As a result one person was taken to the Wanaka Medical Centre with a dislocated shoulder. One or possibly two vehicles will be written off and the offending driver is facing several charges and a very hefty repair bill as they were intoxicated.

Two other drivers were also found to be driving with an excess breath alcohol level.

After the Wanaka Police caught six locals drink driving last week, clearly the message isn’t getting through. The risk of driving after drinking, far outweighs any rewards. This is a small town and easy to get local transport - use it!

Police attended three other vehicle accidents, two involving animals on the roads. If you see animals loose please dial 111 so we can take the appropriate action.

In the early hours of Sunday morning a Ford Falcon was taken from Plantation Road. It was later found crashed on SH6 south of Lake Hawea. To prevent this sort of opportunist crime we need to lock our vehicles and make sure the keys aren’t accessible.
