It’s Plastic Free July; congratulations to everyone giving it a go this year and taking their own containers and reusable bags to the shops. Local shops are really going out of their way to support their customers’ efforts to go single use plastic free.

To celebrate, Plastic Bag Free Wanaka are running Honey Wrap workshops. Honey wraps are your cute wee friends when you want to find an alternative to cling film. Made from organic beeswax and cotton, they can be wiped clean and reused for months.

They are healthy too, as there is no plasticising chemicals rubbing up against your food. Honey wraps can wrap up pretty much anything in a

school lunch, for example, sandwiches, crackers or cut up apples. They’re also great for fridge storage.

You don’t need to spend heaps of money to buy them; come and learn how to make them yourself!

You’ll take away your own honey wrap to help you break the cling film habit along with the knowhow to make your own at home. All equipment will be provided, just bring yourselves. Free entry, koha welcome; see Plastic Bag Free Wanaka Facebook page for workshop times.

IRONSIDE: John R. (Tinny) 14.03.1939 – 21.04.2017 John was the eldest son of the late Elder and Lillian Ironside who lived at Allanton before moving to Mt Barker, near family. John attended school at Allanton, then Wanaka D.H.S. On leaving school he worked on J B Falconers farm near Gore. Back to Wanaka, (not in order) he drove a bull dozer for Colin Nolan (Trevor’s father), putting the original road up to Mt Roy for the TV antennae. He drove a logging truck for George Wallis into Haast and back to the Luggate Sawmill. He drove for Reids Transport before it became Upper Clutha Transport. 50 years on, retiring, John couldn’t resist the offer to do some casual driving for Grant Cochrane. Once a trucky, always a trucky: We had some wonderful times travelling the South Island with him.

John loved the mountains, bush, rivers, lakes and the wide open spaces. He was a keen fisherman and had a team that participated in competition every year in October, for the B.I.G. shield, (Booths, Ironsides and Godbys). Every opportunity during the season he was away fishing. Our team won the shield in 2016 and it is in the Luggate Hotel. - Really appropriate as he enjoyed his pint and the male company. 6 females at home when all present: Jane, daughters Colleen and Katie, granddaughters Clara, Ione and Saunoa – wish to acknowledge and thank all of those who attended John’s service, some from miles away, and for the soups, casseroles, baking, flowers, kind visits and hundreds of cards.

We wish to also thank the Luggate Fire Brigade, St John, Police, doctors and nurses who came in our time of need. Special thanks to Dr David Allen who treated John for many years, and also the many doctors, nurses and receptionists at the Wanaka Medical Centre and the Wanaka District Nurses. Last but not least: Ralph Fegan for the service, Cheryl Taylor the organist, the Luggate Hall committee, the Ladies of Luggate for the afternoon tea and also Janice from Affinity, whom we are all greatly indebted to for their help and kindness. We thank you all.

We treasure the great times, miss the companionship and conversations, the chuckles, smiles and bunches of flowers, but we won’t forget his love.

It’s been described a few different ways, but the facts are these; Dominic Hoey and Liz Breslin are launching their books at Rhyme and Reason Brewery this week. It’s a first for both of them. Dom’s first novel and Liz’s first collection of poems.

The two first met when Dom came down to Wanaka for the Outspoken Festival. The Trust

behind Outspoken enjoyed his work so much that they’re bringing him down for this launch.

Liz, as a Hawea Flat local, doesn’t have to travel that far, though she feels like the book itself has been a long journey.

Liz’s book, ‘Alzheimer’s and a Spoon’, is about, “memory, loss, family and social media weirdness, among other things.” Paper Plus will be selling books at the launch with 20% off the cover price donated to Alzheimers Otago.

Dom’s novel, which currently sits at number 7 on New Zealand’s best seller list, is “a tragic love story set in the neighbourhood. It’s about what happens when people are forced to live in a memory of their home. There’s also lots of funny stuff too.”

Wanaka Ski and Snowsports Club celebrates success Wanaka Ski and Snowsports Club (WSSC) recently held a celebration event at the Lake Wanaka Centre which showcased the remarkable successes of local athletes during the last northern winter and also raised funds to support the club’s potential 2018 Winter Olympians in their quest for success in PyeongChang.

The auction, held as part of the proceedings, raised nearly $10,000 and the club’s thanks go to the supportive local community who generously donated items. Wanaka retailers Racers Edge, Base and Outside Sports offered prizes and discounts for snowsports events, Ridgeline Adventures and Wanaka Wine Tours donated unique experiences; and Coastal Cowhides, leant their support to our local NZ champion Piera Hudson. The club would like to give thanks to New World, Treble Cone and Cardrona ski fields and the many other individuals and organisations who supported the auction.

WSSC is not just about snowsports at the very highest levels. It’s also about having fun. Many will be familiar with the club’s regular Race Your Mate events, which are held at Treble Cone and Cardrona to help families have fun together whilst developing a passion for snowsports. The events offer something for everyone, from the very top levels to newcomers to the sport. Last Saturday’s event at Cardrona saw a four-year old competing against a World Freeride Tour athlete.

And where else could three generations of the same family race against each other?

The club is also keen to support snowports skills development for locals at all the Upper Clutha snowsports areas. Again, this operates at all ability levels, and with a membership approaching 500 Wanaka Ski and Snowsports Club can be sure to find you some great ski buddies. If you don’t want to ski or snowboard as fast or energetically as the rest of your family, come along and join one of the social locals groups at Cardrona or Treble Cone under the guidance of an instructor. The club also offers Nordic skiing or snow shoeing experiences at Snow Farm, as well as numerous social events and weekends away.

On 3rd July a local woman was processed for Drink Driving on Ardmore Street, and the reading was very high, so off to Court she goes. A petrol drive-off at BP Wanaka was reported after $87.80 of petrol was not paid for. Enquiries will be made with the vehicle owner. That night a burglary to a house in Ragan Lane was reported where alcohol and electronic items were stolen. Reminder: lock all windows and doors when you’re not home.

On 4th July a local man was summonsed to Court for drink driving after a high blood alcohol level was disclosed. That same day Police received a theft complaint when a woman stole $44.99 worth of groceries from New World. Enquiries are being made to locate this person. A reminder that New World has a very good CCTV system.

On 5th July a burglary was reported at a Hewson Crescent address at Lake Hawea, where a Karcher commercial vacuum cleaner was stolen.

On 6th July a Tauranga man was arrested for assault on the manager at Woodies Bar during a Cardrona staff cross-dress function. He has arranged a date with the Judge in Queenstown.

On 8th July another local woman was processed for drink driving. That evening a Geraldine man was arrested for possession of a large knife and throwing a beer bottle during an altercation in Ardmore St. On 9th July Police attended a domestic incident in Lake Hawea. A mail box was reported as being damaged in Main Road, Luggate. A male was arrested for an assault on a local man and his driver licence was suspended. Also, Police attended a single vehicle non-injury crash at Bridge 10 on the Crown Range Road.

A reminder that the roads will be very icy on most mornings so drive to the conditions, wear seatbelts at all times while travelling and vehicle following distances should be twice what they normally are. A reminder also to keep an eye on your drinks and personal property when visiting bars.
