The Fit Collective and CrossFit Wanaka have partnered to fundraise for the Central Lakes Mental Health Team to help support their initiatives for the families and individuals in Wanaka who are struggling with mental illness, suicidal thoughts, anxiety and depression. This is a subject that is often swept under the carpet but one that sadly touches almost everyone at some point. While we live in an idyllic setting many people still feel isolated, disconnected and face stressors ranging from relationship issues, financial, alcohol and drugs, and the team are at the forefront caring for these people. They provide a mixture of assessment, talking therapies, occupational therapy, psychological services and community support to assist people to be well integrated into their community as well as urgent/crisis responses. “30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity on most days of the week can have mental health benefits, particularly for depression and anxiety, and is excellent for reducing stress.” said Jo Harry, Manager of CLCMHT. “Exercise releases mood-enhancing chemicals, improves muscle and heart function, increasing blood flow to the brain and this in turn increases the efficiency of brain chemicals and improves self-esteem and increases social interaction.”
