National Volunteer Week (17 – 23 June) is a time to celebrate the 1.2 million people who are volunteering their time and skills to our communities every year. Every week here in the Upper Clutha, hundreds of volunteers put in countless hours to a huge range of organisations to keep our community ticking along so beautifully. Our community and environment benefits enormously from their volunteering spirit and generosity. Volunteering Central thanks all volunteers for their passion and commitment! Everyone has their part to play and no matter how small the role appears, volunteers are instrumental in keeping our communities strong, connected and special places to live and visit. We encourage everyone who has considered volunteering, but never quite got round to it – to get out there and just do it! Volunteering Central are thrilled to have the support of some amazing community leaders to raise awareness

of roles out there. This weekend, endurance athlete and coach Dougal Allan will be hanging up his running shoes and volunteering at Wanaka Parkrun helping the 100% volunteer team host their 5km timed run from Wanaka Station Park.

Next week, Olympic medallist Zoi Sadowski-Synnott is volunteering her time and skills with the local Pippins and Brownies where she will play games with the girls, share stories about countries she has competed in and take the girls through some physical exercises and games. MY COMMUNITY NEWS Support Wanaka’s Community Foodbank this winter This winter Community Networks Wanaka is joining up with Dripping Bowl to nourish & warm those in need of a helping hand. During the colder months, there is often extra pressure on families and individuals with power costs and illnesses. Over the last few years we have seen the numbers of people accessing the Community Foodbank (operated by Community Networks) increase by 25% in the winter. Dripping Bowl has generously offered to help this winter through a ‘pay it forward’ system. They love to feed people nourishing and tasty wholefoods using organic and local ingredients where possible, including The People’s Bread Co. And now, through your donations, they will be able to provide hot meals to those accessing the foodbank. Donations will be turned into Dripping Bowl vouchers that will be given to families at the foodbank. They have also arranged for a group of mighty men to shave off their beards to help raise funds and bring awareness of the Foodbank! The shave will take place on 29 and 30 June by Sergeant and

Madam Mouse Haircutters. They are still on the lookout for any hairy individuals who may wish to join them for the big shave off. If you’re up for this, pop into the Dripping Bowl to see Jesse or Andi. ) ru;v;m|v Äź -u;m|Ä˝v ;uvr;1ŕŚžÂˆ;Ä˝ One hundred and thirty-three (27%) parents responded to the ‘Parent’s Perspective’ survey recently conducted by the Wanaka Alcohol Group, which explored their attitudes and behaviours around youth and alcohol. Results showed most parents were comfortable with their young person consuming alcohol at 16 years with supervision and 18 years without supervision. Nearly half (46%) of the parents with

16 and 17 years olds supplied their child with alcohol for a supervised occasion and a quarter supplied for an unsupervised occasion. Beer and RTDs were the most commonly supplied alcoholic beverages, and most parents appeared to supply between one and four drinks. However, nine percent of parents said that they supply their underage young person with five or more drinks. Parental concerns about drinking
