MY COMMUNITY NEWS Rowing: How Hard Can it Be? According to the utterly charming Irish Olympians, the O’Donovan brothers, rowing is “pretty simple really” just “go from A to B as fast as you can” and “close your eyes and pull like a dog”. If you would like the chance to test the veracity of their words and give rowing a go then come down to the Upper Clutha rugby grounds on Saturday 23 September at 9am when Wanaka Rowing Club will be holding its annual ‘Come and Try Day’ from the woolshed. Attendees will be given an overview on the types of boats and equipment used, the opportunity to learn the correct rowing technique on an ergometer and, weather

permitting, put their newly gained knowledge into practice on the water. The ‘Come & Try Day’ is aimed at students in year 9 and above and participants must be able to swim 50 metres in light clothing.

If they enjoy the experience and would like to do more rowing, participants can sign up to a six-week trial with the option of joining the club full time thereafter as competitive rowers or coxens. The junior rowing season runs from September to April. If you are of a more mature vintage and keen to give rowing a go, the club hopes to hold a Masters open day in April 2018.
