The Trust has donated around $5,000 worth of equipment to enable Wanaka St John to have medics on mountain bikes at various events. The venture has also been supported by Racer’s Edge and Thule who will supply the bikes and racks to hold the specially-built paniers. Warbirds Over Wanaka General Manager Ed Taylor says as part of the event’s health and safety plans they are always looking at ways of minimising vehicle movements within the airshow grounds.
Wanaka St John Chair Dell Taylor says having the bikes has been on their ‘wish list’ for a number of years given the large number of outdoor events in the area. Kiwi entertainers the Topp Twins have been announced as one of the major drawcards for next year’s Wanaka A&P Show. A new community project to help restore the Bullock Creek wetlands area is taking off. The creek near Stone Street has been choked up with invasive weeds and Fish and Game has a 10-year-plan to clean it up. %XW &URPZHOO EDVHG ¿ HOG RI¿ FHU 3DXO YDQ Klink said with the amount of support in recent weeks it probably won’t take that long. The Department of Corrections is now involved and starting in the New Year there will be people doing community service at the creek every Saturday for three months. Meanwhile, Te Kakano Aotearoa Trust has been holding working bees onsite over the past few months in conjunction with Fish and Game, and

“The Wanaka Show is in a beautiful setting by the lake and there are lots of fabulous things that happen there – we’re very excited,� says Lynda Topp. “We’re bringing all the characters with

Above: Emily Watson It is not uncommon to see Emily Watson out walking with a pack of dogs in tow. Wanaka’s resident dog walking expert and animal sitter never expected her part-time job to evolve into a thriving business. In just over two years, Wanaka Dog Walking & Pet Sitting has become well known as caring and reliable pet sitters. Emily has many regular clients and more than 200 followers on Facebook, where she regularly posts photos and videos, so that dog owners can follow their beloved pets. It’s a far cry from the busy marketing job
that she was involved in back home in England. Since moving to Wanaka three years ago and needing a break from hospitality, Emily decided to follow her passion for animals and began dog walking. ,QLWLDOO\ VKH R൵ HUV KHU FOLHQWV D IUHH ‘meet and greet’ session where she gains their trust and respect before taking responsibility for their pets. Emily has a service for all pets. Whether you have an active dog and need some support ensuring they get the exercise they need, if you are going away for the weekend and want to make sure your pets are cared for in your absence, or if you have a new addition to the family who needs regular checks and extra belly rubs when you are at ZRUN (PLO\ FDWHUV IRU RQH R൵ FOLHQWV too, such as those in town for a wedding who want their dogs to be a part of the ceremony, but then taken away and looked after during the reception. She also feeds people’s cats, horses

Emily recently acquired a new addition to her own family - Luna, a Golden Retriever puppy. She assists with canine behaviourist Leone Ward with her weekly dog training classes and together with a few other dog enthusiasts they recently formed the Wanaka Dog Club. It already has close to 50 members who meet regularly for social interaction and for their dogs to be involved in fun agility. “Everyone has their own background and story,” she said. She has many ideas to expand her business which she hopes to be able to put into action as the Wanaka community continues to grow. Once again Police remind those attending ‘work shouts’ to drink in moderation and organise a ride home at the end of the night. There have been far too many drink drivers apprehended in the last week. Since the beginning of November, 15 drivers have been apprehended for drink driving. That is an increase of 10 on the same period last year. In one case a vehicle was stopped in Lake Hawea which was being driven by an 11 year old. It’s been an interesting last week or so for local Police and in summary: Four drink drivers processed and off to Court over the weekend period, all locals who failed to heed the ‘don’t drink and drive’ message. On Tuesday 6th December we dealt with two minor, non injury crashes on Ardmore St and McLeod Ave. On Wednesday 7th a male was trespassed from the Bullock Bar for his behaviour towards staff. Also that day a local man was charged with assaulting two people on 3rd December. On Thursday 8th, Police received a complaint that 70 bales of hay were stolen from a paddock at Hawea Flat on the evening on 4th December. Anyone with information relating to the theft is asked to contact local Police on (03) 443 7272. Later that day a local male was suspended IURP GULYLQJ IRU DFFUXLQJ H[FHVV GHPHULW SRLQWV On Friday 9th, two males entered New World on Dunmore St and stole groceries. CCTV footage of them and their campervan is now being looked at by Police. A domestic incident was dealt with on Saturday night, along with three of the drink driver incidents. Alcohol was a major factor in all four incidents. On Sunday, Police were called to two separate incidents where calls for mental health services were required. Operation Haiku is happening until the end of January - Police throughout the Southern Region will be focussing on speed, seatbelts and drink drivers. 1 cup butter, softened 1½ cups sugar 2 large eggs 1 tsp. vanilla extract 3 cups all-purpose flour ½ tsp. baking powder ½ tsp. salt Get imaginative with your decorations!
In large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt. In separate large bowl, with mixer at low speed, beat butter and sugar until blended. Increase speed to high; beat until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Reduce speed to low; beat in egs and vanilla until mixed, then beat in flour mixture just until blended, occasionally scraping bowl with rubber spatula. Divide dough into 4 equal pieces; flatten each piece into a disk. Wrap each disk with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight. Preheat oven to 180°C. Remove dough from refrigerator. On lightly floured surface, with floured rolling pin, roll dough until slightly less than 1/4 inch thick. With floured 3-inch to 4-inch cookie cutters, cut dough into as many cookies as possible; reserve trimmings. Place cookies, 2 cm apart, on two ungreased large cookie sheets. Bake until edges are golden, 12 to 15 minutes, rotating cookie sheets between upper and lower oven racks halfway through. Transfer cookies to wire rack to cool. Repeat with remaining dough. When cookies are cool, prepare icing: Place 1 x egg white in a bowl, beat until soft peaks form. Gradually add 1 cup sifted icing sugar and then add food colouring if desired; then get creative with decorating!
