MY COMMUNITY NEWS What’s cooking at Wanaka Playgroup? This winter is set to be an eventful one with a new coordinator on board, our key fundraisers on the horizon and, of course, the delightful children who join us each week! Wanaka Playgroup is a non-profit, parent-run, early childhood facility. We aim to provide a happy, safe, fun, educational and respectful environment for children aged 0–5 and their caregivers. Committee member Jane Sharman said, “Playgroup is a great incentive to get out of the house for a fun and social morning, especially if the weather isn’t wonderful. Everyone’s so friendly and kids can engage at the level that suits them”. Lindy Hanley has just started as Playgroup Coordinator and her positive and energetic manner is already breathing new life into sessions. Lindy and her family moved to Wanaka two years ago and they’ve enjoyed becoming involved in the community. She has 20 years’ experience in working with children including a renowned after-school programme, training teachers, and volunteering with dance and music. “I’m excited to work with this incredible bunch of parents and children to create a safe, fun, hands-on space where the curious thrive, the guarded bloom and all feel comfortable and confident”, said Lindy. Through regular themes, children will be able to link information found in music, books, art, cooking and free-play and apply this in their daily experiences. Join us this

Winter is upon us and there are a few messages that need to be shared with those new to town, and a reminder to locals: Police have noticed a sudden rise in the number of cyclists not wearing cycle helmets and riding bikes without lights front and rear. $OO DUH FRPSXOVRU\ LQ 1= $OVR WU\ WR ¿QG D ÀXUR WRS WR F\FOH LQ DW night so you can be seen. The helmet is best worn on the head rather than hung on the handle-bars. In recent winters the number of thefts in local licensed premises increased markedly, so please keep an eye on your jackets, wallets/ purses, phones and your drinks, as there are some people in this town who prey on others if given the opportunity. Already Police have attended two serious crashes on the Cardrona Valley Road near Boundary Creek. There will be black ice on many of our roads on cold mornings so please slow down if ice is likely. Better to get to your destination a little late than not arrive at all. Vehicle windscreens should be totally clear before you begin to drive. We will continue to target those drivers throughout the winter. On the 5th June there was an evening confrontation between two groups of young males near BP in Ardmore St. An assault complaint is being followed up with an out of town offender. On 8th June a local man was arrested for possessing objectionable material. On the 10th June a group of local youths were spoken to about a damaged mail box in Farrant Drive. Police also received a complaint about some roading signage being stolen from the corner of Helwick St and Brownston St overnight. At 3.30am the next morning Police attended the single vehicle crash on Cardrona Valley Road, 200m north of Boundary Creek. One person was taken by ambulance to hospital and the late model 4WD was a write-off. Take note that this stretch of road north of Boundary Creek can be very icy at times.
