Your local Coastguard Unit was the Coastguard Southern Region Unit of the 2014/15 year and one of our members was the On Vessel Volunteer of the Year. This is the second year we have been so recognised. During the last year we have been on 11 operations: 5 police, 2 direct requests and 4 supports to events. Without local support and funding we could not operate: Coastguard is only partially funded by government and lotteries grants.

Coastguard Wanaka Lakes started as a Marine Section of LandSAR in 2007 and became a Coastguard Unit in 2011. Since the Unit took delivery of its vessel in October 2013 our members have trained hard so that the unit is now fully operational. We cannot thank Wanaka people enough for your financial support last year which enabled us to ensure we could equip the vessel well – every dollar is used for training.

The unit is manned by about 20 active volunteers who are in an extensive training programme to become qualified to operate the boat safely.

The Unit needs your support each year so celebrate their success at the Melbourne Cup Day at the Lone Star on Tuesday 3rd November. Get a group together and celebrate whilst supporting a great cause.

Tickets are $20, all of which goes to the Coastguard.

This gives you entry to an afternoon of fun, entry into the draw for a Classic Flights flight and a glass of bubbles on arrival. The afternoon’s activities include a best dressed male and female competition, make sure to dress up to be in to win a prize. There will also be a raffle and an auction of some great items. After the last race we will be entertained by The Jen Shelton Singers.

Police attended a number of domestic disputes. A drink driver was caught and suspended for 28 days even before he got to court.

A young man, intoxicated in a local bar got arrested over the weekend for assaulting Police and having cannabis in his possession.
