Rima Te Wiata to speak at Festival of Colour Cocktail Party Fundraiser. The Festival of Colour is staging a Celebration of the Arts cocktail party to raise funds to commission a new work to have its New Zealand premier at the 2019 Festival of Colour. The glam cocktail party will also feature an auction of a variety of sought-after items as it kicks off Festival celebrations on Monday March 27. Guest speakers at the event are Rima Te Wiata and Wanaka’s very own film buff Calum MacLeod. Rima is well known for her many TV and movie roles, most recently in ‘Hunt for the Wilderpeople’. “The Celebration of the Arts cocktail party is about getting together for a glam night out and

having a party before the Festival of Colour begins, but at the same time raising funds to commission a unique piece of work that can premiere in Wanaka,” says Festival of Colour co-chair Hetty Van Hale.

“Enabling a new commission helps put Wanaka on the map and creates Wanaka pride, because we are creating something unique for New Zealand.” The Festival hopes to raise about $20,000 at the function. The cost of a production will likely be more than $20,000 but it’s unclear of the final cost until the work is chosen. The cocktail party will be held at the Lake Wanaka Centre on Monday, March 27, from 5.30pm. Tickets - limited to 200 - are $45 and available from the Festival of Colour website www.festivalofcolour.co.nz.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS Wanaka Trail Ride 2017: pre-register now or volunteer Get involved with the 3rd Annual Wanaka Trail Ride, Sunday 23 April - it’s the trailbike riders and volunteers who make this unique fundraiser so successful! Wanaka Trail Ride covers Deep Creek, Long Gully and Lindis Peak Stations, near Tarras. The specially designed course caters for all ages and abilities, with landowners generously providing access to this stunning hill-country. The event attracts over 500 trailbike enthusiasts from across the South Island. This joint fundraiser for Wanaka Primary School and Montessori Children’s House Wanaka raised $28,000 last year, benefitting many young families in the community. Trailriders – pre-register online for discounted entry fees and a chance to win great prizes! Pre-registered riders will have the option to sign in and pick up their packs on the Saturday afternoon to save time on the day itself.

Wanaka was busy over the weekend with a great turn-out to the A & P Show. It was good to see most people being patient with the influx of traffic and road closures. However, Police were busy both Friday and Saturday night with alcohol fuelled incidents. Police were called to an incident outside the Bullock Bar after three patrons were removed. There was an assault outside the Doughbin which involved a group of people. A 20 year old male was arrested and received a pre-charge warning after he was refused entry to 3RVW 2I¿FH /DQH EXW FRQWLQXHG WR WU\ DQG IRUFH KLV ZD\ LQ Police received a report from someone who had found a large footprint and dent on the door of their vehicle. This occurred while the vehicle was parked on the street overnight. When walking home at night please keep your hands and feet to yourself. Damaging property is not acceptable. A boat on Lake Hawea was reported overdue. Three boats were deployed and the boat and occupants were located on the east coast of the lake with mechanical issues. Two boxes containing Tequila and orange juice were stolen from a delivery truck while it was unloading on the forecourt of BP. Two further crashes were attended, one on Kane Rd where a vehicle crossed the centre line and scraped the side of an oncoming vehicle and another on the corner of Helwick Street and Brownston Street were a driver failed to give way. Autumn has arrived bringing colder mornings, which means vehicles will start having dew/ice on the windscreens. Please make sure your windows are clear before setting off on your journey.
