Anna Laming and Jane Sharman are delighted to be hosting another Pink Ribbon event this May, raising vital funds for the Breast Cancer Foundation NZ. Last year they ran a very successful Pink Ribbon Breakfast and wanted to repeat the buzz, but with a slightly different angle – and so have opted for a high tea. “We were so happy to be able to donate over $2,000 to the Breast Cancer Foundation from our breakfast last year and we know we can repeat this and give ladies in our community a fun afternoon at the same time!”, says Anna. “We are so grateful to Peak Functions who are supporting us again by providing their beautiful venue and we’re very excited to have Stir Tea on board to supply delicious tea to accompany the afternoon tea treats”. The line-up includes a fashion segment from local stylist Trudie Millar and guest speaker Emma Conyngham who will share her breast cancer journey and the unique business ‘Nice Nips’ she has created

following her experiences. Local musician Anna van Riel will also be performing a couple of her beautiful songs. “The event is all about celebrating women in our community – supporting those with a breast cancer story, and encouraging women to feel good, look after their bodies and enjoy themselves”, Jane says. “Don’t forget to wear an element of pink! We loved seeing all the different shades last year, it really adds to the fun atmosphere.” The Pink Ribbon High Tea is on Saturday 26 May from 2.00pm–5.00pm at Peak Function Centre. A cross section of British cars are anticipated to be on display by both members and visitors from outside the region. This is first time such an event has been held in Central Otago.

A series of interactive community and stakeholder engagement sessions are being held on 21 and 22 May to bring people together to share their ideas in an open and interactive environment. The sessions follow on from the signing of a 100-year long-term lease between Queenstown Airport Corporation (QAC) and Queenstown Lakes District Council for Wanaka Airport, which now enables future planning, development and investment. QAC Chief Executive Colin Keel says everyone in the community is “encouraged to come along and get involved in the discussion and share their thoughts and ideas”. “The future development of Wanaka Airport will have a significant impact on the region’s success. It’s important for us to collectively consider what makes both Wanaka and the airport community special and ensure we work together to create an airport we are all proud of.” Facilitated discussions will include what are the airport’s strengths, what’s the community and stakeholder’s appetite for a return of scheduled services, what other opportunities for growth could there be and what does success look like to the community in 30 years? Some light background material will be provided

prior to the sessions to ensure people have all the information needed to fully participate. Light non-alcoholic drinks and food will be provided and both sessions will include the same questions and format. Feedback gathered online and at the events will help inform a long-term master plan for the airport, due to commence later this year, ensuring the airport is developed in a way that meets community needs and is consistent with QAC’s four guiding principles - sustainable, adaptable, affordable and memorable. Auction items were donated by local business people and a lively auction and raffle contributed to the funds raised. Some quiz participants realised they knew more than they thought and at the end of the evening the three winning teams generously donated

their prize money to the Trust. The trust supports local families who experience financial hardship due to the medical, physical or psychological condition of their child. To date, the trust has supported over 220 families. The applications are many and varied and include medical appointments, speech therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, supply of health equipment, counselling and assessments

for learning disabilities. Travel and accommodation costs are also considered. All applications are on a recommendation of a Medical Practitioner or other suitably qualified health or educational professional. This week saw Police dealing with a steady stream of incidents. Here is a few of them in a nutshell: A local Hawea farmer was both dismayed and annoyed when he discovered someone had accessed his property on the corner of Muir Road and Cemetery Road and dumped 33 truckloads of unwanted rocks, dirt and weed mat. Hopefully this was an innocent mistake and the owner of the waste will make good and contact the farmer. If not he has offered $500 dollars for any information that will identify the culprit. A commercial vessel was assisted to safety by the coastguard as it had mechanical issues. A local male has been arrested and charged with 9 separate shoplifting incidents at New World. He was tracked once again on their CCTV network and now has to answer to the judge. A staff member of a retail outlet is being investigated for theft from his employer, never good to bite the hand that feeds you. Two persons were processed for excess drink driving GXULQJ WKH ZHHN %RWK UHFHLYHG GROODU ¿QHV DQG ORVW half their demerit points in one hit. A male working at one of our local bars has been charged with assault after he became involved in an altercation with an intoxicated patron after they were ejected from the bar. Several domestic harm incidents were attended to by Police this week. As these situations can often be sensitive we don’t divulge much detail. A house on Stone Street reported a burglary after someone had smashed in the front door when the owner was out. Any information surrounding this would be greatly appreciated.
