Arriving & speaking in Wanaka | 23 Jan 2018 Interpersonal violence is often hidden behind closed doors with no voice to be heard; Wanaka is no exception. Meet Emilia Lahti, a young inspiring TedX speaker, activist and researcher from Finland who will be running into Wanaka on 23 January and will speak at the Lake Wanaka Centre that evening. She is not just doing one marathon, but 50 in 50 days throughout the length of New Zealand with her message being about opening ‘closed doors’ and breaking the silence and stigma around interpersonal violence. New Zealand and Finland rate highly in domestic violence. Both countries have also been forerunners in the suffragette movement where the spirit of Sisu – a Finnish term for the sheer grit, determination and spirit required to get through adversity – has created societal change. It is no coincidence then, that Emilia

has chosen New Zealand for her marathon efforts and message-bearing journey. A woman of tenacity and role model of Sisu, Emilia highlights the courage, fortitude and stories of those who have overcome violence and are now living life with more purpose. The evening, which starts at 6.30pm, promises inspiration, challenge and an invitation to speak up about social issues and individually and collectively make for change in our partnerships, families and communities. MY COMMUNITY NEWS Bag a peak in the Lindis Pass To ease back into the season’s conservation work in the Lindis Pass Scenic Reserve after the holidays, Lindis Pass Conservation Group (LPCG) volunteers spend a day exploring in the reserve observing and recording flora and fauna. On Saturday 27 January, there will be a joint LPCG /Central Otago Lakes Branch F&B guided loop walk to peak 1423m in the southwest of the Reserve, from which impressive panoramic views can be. The return walk will explore subalpine rock outcrops and their flora and fauna. Moderate fitness and agility is required for a sustained steep hill climb and rocky terrain. The LPCG was established in 2004 with members from Otago and the Upper Waitaki. Its purpose is to help maintain and enhance the natural values of the Reserve through a

community conservation partnership with the Department of Conservation. The main activity of the group is to control weeds such as sweet brier and Russell Lupin which if left unchecked would rapidly spread, smothering native vegetation and changing the ecology and outstanding natural landscape, admired by thousands of people every year. In more recent years, hundreds of snow tussocks grown from seed collected in the reserve have been planted, to promote natural regeneration where the natural cover is denuded.

DAVE JONGSMA’S MEMORIAL SERVICE 10 January 2018 What an incredible send-off Dave had at his memorial and celebration of life on 10 January. Thank you to all who attended, and to those of you who were unable to attend, we felt your presence. The girls and I have been overwhelmed by everyone’s support; making us delicious meals, sending flowers, cleaning our houses, driving our Canadian family around and supporting them also; the cuddles with puppies when it all felt too much, the shoulders to cry on and the efforts to make us laugh as well and of course all the great hugs...thank you so much for propping us up. A huge thank you to Sonia and Mark Richter who offered to organise Dave’s service and host it on their beautiful land. Because of your generosity, the girls and I had space to begin to come to terms with our loss and be there for family and each other. Thank you to their team who supported their efforts and helped with the practical things behind the scenes.
