ANZAC Day 2018. This years’ service marks the 100th Anniversary to the end of World War 1. It is hard for any of us to imagine just how hard it must have been for the survivors of WW1 to return to their homes and loved ones that they had left behind. What would they find? How many of their friends and family did not survive? How hard was it for the returning service personnel to pick up where they left off in their relationships, work and family?

Important Dates/Times:

New Zealand suffered huge casualties in relation to our very small population at the time. The effects of this are still felt throughout New Zealand today. However, we can be very pleased with where New Zealand is today, thanks to the sacrifices of those many service personnel.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS Catch it while you can! What do they teach kids at school these days? Forged cheques, epic dance numbers, jazzy music. At Mount Aspiring College, the actors, the dancers, the musicians and the crew are full on, learning about how to fool most of the people most of the time. Yes, this year’s college musical production is ‘Catch Me If You Can!’ The show will be familiar to many based on the 2002 film of the same name. It’s about the life of precocious teenager Frank Abignale Jr. who successfully poses as a pilot, a doctor and a lawyer - living the high life and winning the girl of his dreams. But when Frank’s lies catch the attention of FBI agent Carl Hanratty, Carl pursues Frank across the country to make him pay for his crimes. This production is

based on a true story set in 1960’s America and is still popular today. Director Emily McRae says, “Working with the cast and crew on this show has been a fantastic adventure.Their focussed and passionate effort is the key to success. I am so proud of the effort of all those involved in this production.” She is also grateful for the community support and the generosity of sponsors. Catch the magic of the MAC students in performance at the Lake Wanaka Centre from 9-12 May. Doors open at 7.00pm. Hawea District Dawn Service

On ANZAC Day 25 April at 7.00am, there will be the Hāwea District Dawn Service at the ANZAC Peninsula on the Lake Hāwea Dam. The ceremony will begin with a Call to

Commemoration, followed by a waiata sung by Hāwea Flat School students, the reading of the Hāwea District Roll of Honour for the 15 locals who fell during the Great War, a laying of wreaths by the official party, and the Australian and New Zealand Anthems. The Service will conclude with a silent tribute and reveille.

It is a time to remember and honour the service and sacrifice of our original ANZACs and the generations of servicemen and women who have fought in wars and conflicts.
