This Sunday marks the start of the first annual Bike Wanaka Summer Series. This series will be run in conjunction with the Wanaka Kids Club Mini Series. A fun morning out for the whole family! This is the event’s first year; which will be a series of 4 races hosted at different tracks around Wanaka over the summer. "It’s all about having fun, being social and active while supporting Wanaka’s mountain biking industry. We want to encourage Bike Wanaka club members, locals, kids as well as visitors to the area to get outside and enjoy our local tracks."

There are age categories from balance bikes right through to the adult race. On site there will be bungy trampolines, ice cream and coffee as well as heaps of prizes on offer thanks to the support from our wonderful local businesses. The council is currently looking into permanently chlorinating the Hawea water supply - on the back of Havelock North’s contamination last year. A public meeting will be held at the Hawea Community Centre this Saturday at 10am, where locals will hear the latest from the QLDC on what they have investigated so far. The Upper Clutha Messenger was created by 6KLUOH\ DQG 'DYLG -DTXLHU\ LQ VWDUWLQJ Rŕľľ as a single page foolscap publication born out of necessity and a genuine need to communicate in the days before regular newspaper delivery, computers and email. Wanaka was a town of around 700 people when the Messenger started - fast forward to 2017 and the Messenger has continued to grow and evolve, much like the town! In the early days The Messenger was a single page community diary produced on a Gestetner duplicator and was distributed by Colin and Pat Johnson who also delivered the milk and the ODT. The Messenger was taken over by the Miller family in 2004. Up until 2007, the Messenger was hand collated by a team of 5 people, who would painstakingly stack each page, staple and hand roll every copy on Tuesday evening. Until September 2015 the

Town is still busy, the wind continues to be a pest but not for much longer. Traffic volumes are still high so more patience is required. Meanwhile there has been quite a bit happening in the policing department over the last week, here is a summary: Last Tuesday, the 10th of January, a Hawea Flat resident made a complaint of damage to his dwelling. On the 11th, there was a crash at the corner of McDougal Street and Brownston Street, between a campervan and car, when the campervan driver failed to give way. There were no injuries fortunately. On the 12th, Police received a complaint of theft from an Albert Town address. Over the weekend, two drivers were processed for driving under the influence of alcohol, while a local male was arrested after running over vehicles parked at the lakefront in Ardmore Street. On Sunday the 15th, a 67 year old female was assisted from the Upper Clutha River Track by SAR and Ambulance staff after she fell off her mountain bike. Police were also advised on Sunday that two males were in difficulties at the French Ridge Hut, but they had managed to walk out unassisted. Also on Sunday, a male tourist went swimming at the Blue Pools at Makarora and got into difficulty. He was retrieved from the bottom of the pools and was resuscitated with the help of a passing doctor and nurse. A near tragedy averted by the intervention of some special people. Found property has steadily come into the station over the holiday period. Items of interest are pieces of jewellery, childrens small bikes, a wheelchair in very good condition, and the usual cell phones and wallets. Please if you may have misplaced any items at all, come into the station to enquire. Police will continue to focus on our roads through January as Operation Haiku continues. The 4km/hr speed tolerance is still being enforced, while the wearing of seatbelts and cell-phone usage while driving will be monitored. Have a safe week.
