MY COMMUNITY NEWS A Musical Event with a Twist Heard of Hot Tuna Sandwich ? No ? Lake Hawea Community Centre is pleased to present an evening of subtle and occasionally subversive satirical songs by The Andrew London Trio. They carry on in the tradition of Hot Club Sandwich, who have toured extensively throughout New Zealand since the early 1990s, with songs about the trivia and minutiae of daily life from the point of view of a middle-aged, middle-class, Middle Earther, which is delivered in a deceptively innocuous 1940s swing style with occasional forays into folk, blues, country and hip-hop. Singer/songwriter Andrew London was part of this group and is now touring New Zealand with his own group, The Andrew London Trio under the umbrella of Arts on Tour New Zealand. This group comprises Andrew, his wife Kirsten London and Nils Olsen. Their songs cover the gamut from pretentious socialites, male insecurity and modern

parenthood to driving habits, rugby culture and the depredations of aging. The obvious opportunity for humour in these themes is eagerly seized upon and exploited mercilessly, but occasional poignancy and pathos are never far away... Beatle-esque vocal harmonies provided by Kirsten London on bass, and ex-HCS sax/clarinetist Nils Olsen. The Andrew London Trio has been on the road since early October, travelling from Waipapa to Coromandel, Tokoroa to Stewart Island, receiving rave reviews from their audiences. A Small Bang To The Head Can Have a Huge Impact Brain Injury / Concussion – What support is available in Upper Clutha The Brain Injury Association of Otago (BIA) provides support for the people of Upper Clutha that have sustained a concussion or brain injury through a traumatic or medical event, at times devastating with major changes for the individual and their families. In NZ there are approximately 36,000 brain injuries a year – one every 15 minutes The BIA Liaison Officer works in Wanaka a minimum of one day a month providing support, advocacy, education and information to those with the injury, their family / whanau and the wider community. Information and education is extremely important as people deal with a brain injury. The focus is ensuring the appropriate rehabilitation and support is in place to enable the person to rebuild their life. BIA understands the stress an injury can bring and provides assistance with navigation around ACC, Work and Income, medical or other organisations.

Concussion (mTBI) makes up 85% of injuries, the majority being from falls. To increase awareness on how to recognise, rest and recover from concussion the BIA are developing resources for schools and sporting organisations across the Otago. The BIA also can provide speakers to any local groups or organisations around brain injury or concussion. The BIA also facilitate a monthly Support Group where individuals and families gain in confidence, improve their coping skills, reduce emotional stress, share management strategies, learn to socialise again in a safe and secure environment and develop new friendships. An Annual Street Appeal will be held this Friday 20th October, with all funds raised going towards maintaining Liaison Service in the Upper Clutha area.
